What can you tell us about the setting of this novel?

When Love Arrives takes place in central Ohio. The hero, Brett Somers, lives and works in Columbus, but other characters live in the rural area southwest of the capital city. That’s where I grew up so it’s a special place to me. Farmhouses, pastures and fields, a broad and winding creek. Trees to climb and gardens to weed and baby kittens to cuddle. It’s nostalgic and it’s “home.”

Who are the main characters, and what is at stake for them in this story?

Brett didn’t know he had a son until the boy, now in a coma, was severely injured in an automobile accident. Since he’s not allowed to see his son, all Brett can do is pray. But he’s not sure God listens to the prayers of a guy like him. He’s also tired of the emptiness of his life, and he wants to be better example for his child.

The heroine, Dani Prescott, is angry at Brett for publicly blaming her mother for his parents’ deaths. They died in a plane accident, and Dani’s mom was the pilot. She died in the crash, too.

Dani wants to humiliate Brett but she can’t figure out exactly how. It doesn’t help that the more she gets to know him, the harder it is to maintain her anger. She likes him. He likes her. But what will happen when he finds out who she really is?

Which of the characters surprised you the most in this story, and how so?

I think Elizabeth surprised me most. She’s a second-grader whose mom is engaged to Brett’s cousin. (That all happens in Where She Belongs, the first Misty Willow Series novel.) Brett didn’t think much of kids in the first story, but Elizabeth’s sweet nature has captured his heart. In Brett’s darkest moment—when he’s confronting his own callousness—little Elizabeth comforts him with a verse she memorized during a dark time in her young life. It’s such a tender scene, and one of my favorites in the story.

I love being surprised by characters—it’s one of the most fun and thrilling experiences of writing.

How did the writing of this story impact you as a person or as an author?

My first two published novels were written before they were contracted. I had plenty of time to work out the kinks, develop the characters, and polish the story. But When Love Arrives was sold as part of the series. For the first time I had a deadline based on a three-paragraph story idea.

And I was scared.

What if I couldn’t do it? What if I failed?

I prayed and I started writing. About a quarter of the way through, I knew something was wrong. The premise wasn’t working. So I started again, keeping as much as I could, adding new scenes, revising others. This time I got about three-fourths done when the same thing happened. This premise wasn’t right either.

I walked and I prayed and I prayed and I walked and one day, I just knew!

Dani’s mom piloted the plane that killed Brett’s parents. And she died in the crash too.

I deleted a few scenes, added others, revised what needed revising, and wrote the rest of the story.

Before the deadline.

I’m still scared to begin a new contracted project. Can I do it?

Yes, I believe I can. As long as I pray and walk throughout the process.

Why is this story important to you?

292852_whenlovearrivesalexander_pinsGoing back to Misty Willow is like going home. When I was a teen, I lived in the huge brick house that the heroine loved so much in Where She Belongs.

In When Love Arrives, the cottage plays a larger role. My family spent a lot of time here, too, especially in the summers. (For the stories, I moved the cottage closer to the brick house.)

As I write the series, I’m back to those places I loved during my growing up years. As I said before, it’s very nostalgic for me.

What would you like your readers to take away from this story?

One reviewer said she liked “the underlying message of unexpected blessings.” Another mentioned the themes of restoration and forgiveness.

In this story, we see the painful consequences of events that took place years ago. But we also see that forgiveness, like love, can cover a multitude of sins.

An Unlikely Couple Struggles to Reconcile the Burdens of Their Past

Dani Prescott came to the children’s hospital to spy on Brett Somers–so how did she end up on a date with him? Weeks earlier she’d seen an interview in which he blamed her mother for the plane crash that had killed his parents. But the crash had killed her mother as well, so Dani can’t believe the story Brett’s trying to sell to the media.

Vowing to find a way to discredit the privileged–and maddeningly handsome–Brett, Dani has been following him and taking photos, hoping to find something she can use against him. But when she catches his eye instead, she quickly finds herself offering up a fake name and agreeing to a date. Brett knows this mystery girl is hiding something–but he’s got his own secrets to keep. What will happen when he discovers who she really is? Will Dani and Brett look beyond their own heartaches to discover a love that could heal their deepest pain?

Fresh, flirty, and fast-paced, When Love Arrives is an engaging story that will have readers falling in love with the characters as they navigate the tricky waters between romance and revenge.

    • Oh, yes, they do! Brett is overly confident, ultra-sure of himself, and a tad arrogant. Dani, just by being Dani, throws him for a loop. But then, when he finds out the truth…I can’t say anymore! Thanks, Donna, for participating in the giveaway!

    • Terrill!!! I wrote a long reply and it got lost in the process. Sigh! Anyway, so glad to see you here. I hope you love When Love Arrives even more than Where She Belongs. And that you’ll be as anxious as I am for May to get here. That’s when the third book, What Hope Remembers, releases. So good to connect with you! (copying/saving this time!)
