What can you tell us about the setting of this novel?

The setting of this story is the beautiful and historic city of Savannah Georgia. I’ve been there many times, since my parents first took me there as a child. And I adored researching the details to set my mystery/romance with my husband. Savannah is one of the top vacation destinations in the U.S. Once you’ve been there, it’s easy to see why. Plenty to see and do, and some of the best Southern cuisine anywhere.

Who are the main characters, and what is at stake for them in this story?

My main characters are two private investigators thrown together on a case far from home. Beth Kirby is the more experienced of the two, but since she just left a bad relationship, she’s not quick to commit when sparks fly with her partner. Michael Preston is a lovable, an-American boy from Natchez. He works hard, plays hard, and wants to live happily ever after with the woman he’s fallen in love with. But when their case of marital infidelity turns into murder, neither has much time for romance with so many suspects.

Which of the characters surprised you the most in this story, and how so?

I supposed my hero, Michael, surprised me the most. He’s patient and kind with Beth even when she messes up. I think every husband should study this fictional character and take notes. (smile) In all seriousness, in many ways he’s the dead- opposite of Beth, but has the wherewithal to find common ground when they disagree.

How did the writing of this story impact you as a person or as an author?

I believe even Christians are quick to judge their fellow man in certain areas. And marital infidelity could be one of those areas. My heroine (Beth) learns much from her client (Evelyn Doyle) when Mrs. Doyle discovers her husband has a mistress. Mrs. Doyle is willing to forgive if her husband is sorry, and agrees to attending counseling sessions. Mrs. Doyle’s behavior teaches Beth an important lesson about forgiveness.

Why is this story important to you?

I love creating stories about how imperfect human beings are. We need to lose our tendency to judge and make assumptions. No one is perfect…not matter how hard we try.

What would you like your readers to take away from this story?

First and foremost, I hope to entertain my readers. Because that should be the number one job of a fiction writer. After that, I hope my readers will identify with one or more of my characters, or the situations they find themselves in, and find guidance in how they solve their problems.

In Savannah, Everyone Has Something to Hide

When socialite Evelyn Doyle hires investigative partners and best friends Michael Preston and Elizabeth Kirby to do some routine surveillance on her wayward husband, the detective duo find themselves embroiled in a mystery with more suspects than there are shells on Tybee Island.

Evelyn’s husband turns up dead, leaving her as the police chief’s prime target. The investigation reveals a hodgepodge of potential murderers, including a scheming business partner, a resentful mistress, and a ne’er-do-well brother. It’s up to Mike and Beth to follow the trail of secrets that reaches further than the branches of the moss-draped oaks of Savannah.

As word of the case gets around town, business is booming for Price Investigations. When Mike and Beth hire Kaitlyn Webb, Savannah’s newest transplant, their workload eases, but will the ghosts of her past threaten everyone’s safety before a killer can be put behind bars? And can Mike and Beth find love as their friendship and faith are put to the test?

Mary Ellis has written twelve award-winning novels set in the Amish community and several historical romances set during the Civil War. Her latest, What Happened on Beale Street, is second of a new mystery series, Secrets of the South, from Harvest House Publishers. Magnolia Moonlight will release this summer.

Before "retiring" to write full-time, Mary taught school and worked as a sales rep for Hershey Chocolate, a job with amazingly sweet fringe benefits. Mary enjoys traveling, gardening, bicycling and swimming, and lives in Ohio with her husband, dog and cat.
