Novel Spotlight: Rising Darkness

Rising Darkness is the latest romantic suspense novel in the Finding Sanctuary series by Nancy Mehl, the bestselling author of Gathering Shadows and Deadly Echoes, the first two books in the series. RT Book Reviews says of Nancy’s writing, “Mehl is an amazing author who gives fans what they want and more in every book. Romantic Suspense to Keep Readers Guessing Until the Last Page

Sophie Wittenbauer left her strict Mennonite hometown under a cloud of shame and regret. Certain she's left her past far behind her, she's now focused on her job at a newspaper and is shocked when she stumbles upon the name of someone she knew in her old life. But when she learns the man--a prisoner--claims a suspect from a decades-old unsolved crime is hiding out in the small town of Sanctuary, Missouri, she can't resist following the lead in hopes of furthering her career.

Almost immediately upon her arrival, Sophie's confronted with a face from her past and fears her intention of using a false identity to investigate is doomed. But with the help of Sanctuary's charismatic young pastor, Sophie knows she's getting close. Will she be able to conceal the truth of her own past long enough to find the suspect before someone puts a stop--fatal or otherwise--to her investigation?

What can you tell us about the setting of this novel?

Sanctuary 4Rising Darkness is set in Sanctuary, a small rural town in southern Missouri. Originally settled by German Mennonites, its Mennonite population has dwindled and is now in the minority. There are two churches in Sanctuary, the Mennonite church and a non-denominational church whose pastor is a former Conservative Mennonite. However, the churches and the people respect each other, and the pastors of both churches are close friends.

Throughout the series, there are hints that some people in Sanctuary have secrets. In each book many of those secrets are revealed.

Who are the main characters, and what is at stake for them in this story?

Sophie Bauer works part time for a newspaper in St. Louis. She stumbles onto some information about a criminal who robbed an armored car company seven years ago. Although most people think the man who killed two guards is dead, it’s possible he’s hiding out in Sanctuary, Missouri, with a new identity. Sophie goes to Sanctuary, hoping to find him and use the story to gain the promotion she yearns for. She wants to be a crime reporter for the Saint Louis Times. But she is in for a surprise when she encounters a man from her past. Jonathon Wiese is the only man she’s ever loved. Sophie has changed her name and the way she looks, trying to distance herself from her past. She is terrified Jonathon Wiese will recognize her and she will have to face the terrible act she committed against the town of Kingdom, Kansas, before she ran away and started a new life. Not only is the story she’s seeking at risk, her own damaged heart is in the hands of the only man in the world who has the power to break it.

JonathonJonathon Wiese left Kingdom, Kansas, four years ago. Although he loved the small Mennonite town, he was uncomfortable with all the rules in the Conservative Mennonite Church that oversaw Kingdom. Now he pastors a nondenominational church in Sanctuary, Missouri. He’s much happier, but he still hasn’t found love. When Sophie Bauer comes to town, supposedly looking for information on a long lost relative, he is immediately attracted to her even though he can’t understand why. When he realizes who she really is, he is angry at being deceived. Still, he can’t help being drawn to her. As he fights to protect her from an unknown enemy, he also fights an inner battle with his feelings for a woman he shouldn’t love.

Which of the characters surprised you the most in this story, and how so?

SophieWhen Jonathon knew Sophie Wittenbauer back in Kingdom, Kansas, he saw her as a troubled teenager. Now that she is an attractive, educated woman, he struggles to change his perspective. I think the thing that surprised me most is that all these years he carried a torch for Sophie – even though he didn’t realize it. He pushed away other women because his heart already belonged to Sophie – something he wasn’t able to admit to himself until he came face to face with her again.

How did the writing of this story impact you as a person or as an author?

Sophie Wittenbauer was actually a character in another series. I felt her story was left unfinished. When my editor agreed to let me bring her back, it meant a lot to me. Of all the characters I’ve created, Sophie might be the closest to my heart. Completing her story gave me a great deal of satisfaction.

Why is this story important to you?

Writers have lots of secondary characters who sometimes are left behind when a series moves on. Sophie might be one of the most troubled characters I’ve ever conceived. Giving her “beauty for ashes” was important to me. This story will always have a special place in my heart.

What would you like your readers to take away from this story?

That God wants to give us beauty for ashes. No matter what has happened in our past, we can have a wonderful life!
