The infection wasn’t supposed to happen, but it did. The treatment was supposed to take care of it, but it didn’t. Then Dr. Josh Pearson discovered why—the patients had another infection, one that was universally fatal. The only chance for their survival was treatment with an experimental drug, but the manufacturer might already have discarded its supply.

The stakes were high because the patients were the former President of the United States and a nurse with whom Josh was falling in love. The situation was bad and getting worse by the minute. Overcoming all this would take more than a miracle drug—it would take a miracle.

What can you tell us about the setting of this novel?

S19-481408Miracle Drug takes place in the Dallas area—mainly because that’s where I live, and where a rather famous ex-president currently resides. I’m familiar with the city, but have chosen a fictional description of the private hospital where much of it takes place, as well as the home of the ex-president.

Who are the main characters, and what is at stake for them in this story?

Ryan Reynolds as Dr. Josh Pearson
Ryan Reynolds as Dr. Josh Pearson

Dr. Josh Pearson is an internal medicine specialist, a junior member of the staff of Preston Clinic in Dallas. (I see him as sort of like Ryan Reynolds). The sudden death of a senior physician at the clinic, coupled with an arrangement made between that doctor and his boyhood friend, thrust Josh into the role of doctor to ex-president David Madison. Josh’s serious girlfriend, nurse Rachel Moore (who resembles actress Jennifer Stone), had accompanied Madison on a foreign trip, and both come back with an illness that doesn’t respond to treatment. When Josh finds an experimental drug that may be effective, the question then becomes who gets the limited amount available.

Which of the characters surprised you the most in this story, and how so?

Jennifer Stone as Rachel Moore

I originally wrote lead Secret Service Agent Jerry Lang (think David Caruso) into the novel as an incidental character, but as the story progressed, it was obvious to me that Lang would be an important factor.

How did the writing of this story impact you as a person or as an author?

I was surprised at the quick response I got to a blind email I sent to a current ex-president living in our area, and the cooperative spirit of the Secret Service when they got in touch with me as he asked. Although the Secret Service won’t divulge exact details of the steps they take to guard an ex-president, they were helpful in allowing me to paint a picture that was accurate. As a result, I learned it’s not too frightening to step out on faith and ask for help. It’s surprising how often it comes.

Why is this story important to you?

David Caruso as Jerry Lang

As a physician, I’ve often thought about this type of moral dilemma. It goes back to the story of Solomon, who was asked to award a baby to one of two women. What would a doctor do if he could only help one person of two, and the choice lay between an important world figure and the woman he loved.

What would you like your readers to take away from this story?

Christians are not promised that things will be easy. On the contrary, we often encounter hard situations and tough consequences. What we do have is Someone who will walk with us every step of the way. And with His help, we can get through.

The infection wasn’t supposed to happen, but it did. The treatment was supposed to take care of it, but it didn’t. Then Dr. Josh Pearson discovers why—his patients, including the former President of the United States, have been dosed with a different strain of the original virus, one that is universally fatal. The only chance for survival is treatment with an experimental drug, but the manufacturer might already have discarded its supply.

As if treating the President of the United States isn’t stressful enough, the situation goes from bad to worse when Rachel Moore, a nurse Josh is falling in love with, falls ill. With the nation’s eyes on him, Josh must pull off a miracle to save a man who holds a good deal of power and the woman who holds his heart.
