Someone is after Dr. Sarah Gordon. They’ve stalked her and set a fire at her home. Trying to recover from the traumatic deaths of her husband and infant daughter is tough enough, but she has no idea what will come next. Her late husband’s best friend and a recovering alcoholic detective are trying to solve the mystery before it’s too late, but both appear to be vying for her affection as well. Sarah finds herself in constant fear as the process plays out.

As the threats on her life continue to escalate, so do the questions: Who is doing this? Why are they after her? And with her only help being unreliable suitors in competition with each other, whom can she really trust?

What can you tell us about the setting of this novel?

Medical Judgment is set primarily in Dallas, Texas (a city in which I did my medical training and practiced for many years). The characters and the venues involved are fictitious, but I tried to maintain the “feel” of the Dallas area.

Who are the main characters, and what is at stake for them in this story?

The story features Dr. Sarah Gordon, whose emotions are still raw after the sudden deaths of her husband and young daughter. She has tended to ignore what are later pointed out to her as attempts to injure and possibly kill her. A recovering alcoholic detective (Bill Larson) and her husband’s good friend (Kyle Andrews) are the only two men she can trust, and she eventually even doubts whether she can or should depend on them.

Throughout the story, Sarah works to reestablish her self-confidence and learns to lean on God for help and guidance, even in difficult times.

Which of the characters surprised you the most in this story, and how so?

SarahThe “hero” of the story doesn’t even appear until the last half of the story, and I was as surprised as anyone when I realized who he was and the part he was going to play in Sarah’s life.

Then again, that’s often an offshoot of “seat of the pants” writing, as opposed to having everything plotted out before writing a book.

How did the writing of this story impact you as a person or as an author?

My wife is my first reader, and I always let her read my work when I’m well into writing a book. In this case, I had to trash about twenty thousand words and start over to capture the emotions I wanted to convey. But, of course, she was right.

Why is this story important to you?

It highlights some of the emotions that go with the transition from part of a married couple to a widowed individual, including the attitude readjustment that goes with being responsible for everything once more.

What would you like your readers to take away from this story?

The lead character is angry with God for all the things that have happened in her life. She distrusts those who are trying to help her, and eventually wants to bring things to a close on her own. I want the readers to close the book and think, “God really is in charge, and I can depend on Him.”
