Two murders have rocked the city of Houston. Are they the work of a serial killer, or is a copycat trying to get away with murder?

That is the question facing Special Agent Bethany Sanchez, who is eager for her new assignment in violent crimes but anxious about meeting her new partner. Special Agent Thatcher Graves once arrested her brother, and he has a reputation for being a maverick. Plus, their investigative styles couldn’t be more opposite: he operates on instinct, while she goes by the book.

When hot leads soon fizzle out, their differences threaten to leave them deadlocked. But an attempt on their lives turns up the heat and brings them closer together, and a third victim might yield the clue that will help them zero in on a killer. This could be the case of their careers . . . if they can survive long enough to solve it.

Houston-TexasWhat can you tell us about the setting of this novel?

Deadlock, a romantic suspense, is set in Houston, Texas. My city. My home. I love the fact I can put boots on the ground. Familiar landscapes add more authenticity.

Houston is the most diverse city in the US, fourth largest in population, and still it has the southern charm I love. Harris County is the third largest in the country too. We are not far from Galveston Island where beach fun reigns. Our temperatures are hot in the summer and pleasant in the winter, so we can live outdoors year around. My characters take advantage of the entertainment, dining, recreation, and the traffic that can sometimes slow down an investigation.

Who are the main characters, and what is at stake for them in this story?

Special Agent Bethany Sanchez steps into the violent crime division of Houston’s FBI. She transferred from the civil rights division, but she’s nervous—and a perfectionist. She’s also her own worst critic. However, she has reservations about her new partner, the same man who put her brother in jail. To make matters worse, he has a reputation of getting the job done, no nonsense, and a womanizer. Are the rumors true?

Special Agent Thatcher Graves has worked violent crime for over eight years, but working with a rules girl is a challenge, and she’s hard to get to know. He’s uncertain if he can trust her, and concerned their differences won’t result in a dynamic investigative team but a disaster. His background is psychology, and he’s an out-of-the-box thinker. Recently he made a decision to become a Christian, but his past party-image stops him from revealing the change in his life.

Bethany’s and Thatcher’s first case is a murder that turns into a serial killing, ushering danger into the agents’ every move.

Which of the characters surprised you the most in this story, and how so?

Thatcher surprised me the most. I didn’t have any idea that he’d been in the country-western music world until he told Bethany. He also has tremendous patience with her, understanding her perfectionism and her dysfunctional family.

Bethany refused to give up on her relationship with her family, even though they chose her felon brother over her. She was willing to ignore the gossip about Thatcher to see a highly intelligent man who longed to put God first in his life.

deadlock-verticalHow did the writing of this story impact you as a person or as an author?

Definitely the family dynamics. We all have family members who don’t share our beliefs or values. This deepened my awareness of unconditional love woven with obedience to God’s principles.

Also, choices. We spend our lives making choices and facing the consequences of them. Whether good or bad, those decisions form us into who we are. As an author, I had to go to places within myself that I’d rather forget to write the problems facing Bethany and Thatcher.

Why is this story important to you?

A romantic suspense novel is a balance of love and danger. We neither look for love nor danger, but both involve deep emotions. I wanted to explore the messy emotions of family, greed, and jealousy while placing my characters at odds. The love and the danger they faced together grew them into better and stronger people who embraced their faith. My desire is for the reader to see the same potential in themselves.

What would you like your readers to take away from this story?

God’s sovereignty in all situations of life—family, career, friendships, love, and obeying laws that correspond with God’s principles.

I’d also like for the reader to be entertained by the romance and suspense, be inspired to reach for their own aspirations, and be encouraged in a world that is unpredictable.
