What can you tell us about the setting of this novel?

oxfordCan’t Help Falling is set in Oxford, England. I have to admit to being a bit nervous about this. Unlike my debut novel, Close To You, which is set in New Zealand, where I either knew all of the settings really well or had friends who did, I’ve never been to Oxford. Since I was entirely reliant on things like Google Earth and guide books to help me write the setting. I’m dreading the first Oxford native who writes a review or contacts me to let me know that X street is no longer paced with cobble stones or it’s actually angled parking not parallel parking outside a certain building! I also had an English friend read through the entire manuscript to check the point of view of Peter, the hero, who is English to make sure he was using words/phrases that a “real” Englishman would but I’m sure I’ve missed something somewhere and there’s going to be a reader somewhere one day reading and muttering to themselves “He NEVER would have said that!”

Who are the main characters, and what is at stake for them in this story?

emelia-rachel-mcadamsEmelia Mason is a former tabloid journalist who has fled the US after one of her stories has unintended tragic results. She’s in Oxford trying to reinvent herself and, at the same time, atone for her part in what happened. For her, being able to live with what happened rests entirely on the task that she has set herself to make amends for the damage she has caused.

Peter Carlisle’s dream ever since he was a teenager was to row for Great Britain at the Olympics. However, his decision to try and intervene in a brawl results in an injury that costs him his chance at Olympic glory. He’s determined to fight his way back to the top even if it means risking permanent disability to do so. It’s the only way he can find his way past failing the one person who never stopped believing in his Olympic dream.

Which of the characters surprised you the most in this story, and how so?

Emelia’s cousin, Lacey, surprised me the most. Emelia is a very private person and I needed a character who knew Emelia’s secrets and was on her “team” but also a voice of reason in her life. Lacey kind of just exploded onto the page. The scenes that have her in it were some of the most fun to write 🙂

How did the writing of this story impact you as a person or as an author?

peter-damian-lewisCan’t Help Falling was the first time I had written a book under contract, which is a very different experience to writing a manuscript in the hope that this will be the one that lands you that elusive publishing deal! When I turned in the first version to my editor last October, it would be an understatement to say it needed some work. During developmental edits I pulled it apart, completely re-plotted it, and rewrote about 80% of the manuscript in the space of about six weeks. I’m sure my poor editor was sitting in New York with her head in her hands wondering how on earth I was going to turn it into something publishable! I know it was only possible because of all the people who were praying for me during that process as I was completely overwhelmed by the huge task in front of me. It was a real lesson for me in God showing up when I was at the end of myself and there was no way I could accomplish what I needed to in my own strength or capability.

Why is this story important to you?

Can’t Help Falling is important to me because it challenged me so much as writer. Out of the five manuscripts I’ve completed this was definitely the toughest! Peter and Emelia are two very different characters to Jackson and Allie, the hero and heroine in Close To You, and writing them in a way that made their story come alive on the page really stretched me both in terms of the craft of writing and spiritually. I have been blessed with amazingly supportive and enthusiastic readers as a result of Close To You and I really hope that Can’t Help Falling is a great reading experience for them.

What would you like your readers to take away from this story?

A common theme running through my stories is the one of second chances. Peter and Emelia are both burdened by regret about decisions they have made and struggle with feeling like their lives will always be defined by them. I would love it if readers took away that there is no mistake that they have made that God sees them as being defined by.

A funny, heartfelt romance about how an antique shop, a wardrobe, and a mysterious tea cup bring two C.S. Lewis fans together in a snowy and picturesque Oxford, England.

Emelia Mason has spent her career finding the dirt on the rich and famous. But deep down past this fearless tabloid-reporter façade, there’s a nerdy Narnia-obsessed girl who still can’t resist climbing into wardrobes to check for the magical land on the other side. When a story she writes produces tragic results, she flees to Oxford, England—home to C.S. Lewis—to try and make amends for the damage she has caused.

Peter Carlisle was on his way to become one of Great Britain’s best rowers—until he injured his shoulder and lost his chance at glory. He’s determined to fight his way back to the top even if it means risking permanent disability to do so. It’s the only way he can find his way past failing the one person who never stopped believing in his Olympic dream.

When Peter and Emelia cross paths on her first night in Oxford, the attraction is instant and they find common ground in their shared love of Narnia. But can the lessons from a fantasyland be enough to hold them together when secrets of the real world threaten to tear them apart? Cobblestone streets, an aristocratic estate, and an antique shop with curious a wardrobe bring the world of Narnia to life in Kara Isaac’s inspiring and romantic story about second chances.

A disgraced scholar running from her past and an entrepreneur chasing his future find themselves thrown together—and fall in love—on a Tolkien tour of New Zealand.

Allison Shire (yes, like where the Hobbits live) is a disgraced academic who is done with love. Her belief in “happily ever after” ended the day she discovered her husband was still married to a wife she knew nothing about. She finally finds a use for her English degree by guiding tours through the famous sites featured in the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies. By living life on the road and traveling New Zealand as a luxury tour guide, Allison manages to outrun the pain of her past she can’t face.

Jackson Gregory was on the cusp of making it big. Then suddenly his girlfriend left him—for his biggest business competitor—and took his most guarded commercial secrets with her. To make matters worse, the Iowa farm that has been in his family for generations is facing foreclosure. Determined to save his parents from financial ruin, he’ll do whatever it takes to convince his wealthy great-uncle to invest in his next scheme, which means accompanying him to the bottom of the world to spend three weeks pretending to be a die-hard Lord of the Rings fan, even though he knows nothing about the stories. The one thing that stands between him and his goal is a know-it-all tour guide who can’t stand him and pegged him as a fake the moment he walked off the plane.

When Allison leads the group through the famous sites of the Tolkien movies, she and Jackson start to see each other differently, and as they keep getting thrown together on the tour, they find themselves drawn to each other. Neither expected to fall in love again, but can they find a way beyond their regrets to take a chance on the one thing they’re not looking for?

Kara Isaac is a romantic comedy writer who lives in beautiful Wellington, New Zealand. Her debut romantic comedy, Close To You, is about a disillusioned academic-turned-tour-guide and an entrepreneur who knows nothing about Tolkien who fall in love on a Tolkien themed tour of New Zealand. When she's not working her day job as a public servant, chasing around a ninja preschooler and his feisty toddler sister, she spends her time writing horribly bad first drafts and wishing you could get Double Stuf Oreos in New Zealand..

  1. I really like how the stories incorporate other christian authors and their stories. Tolkein and C.S. Lewis. Authors whose characters go through struggles and pain and triumph. Thank you for this opportunity to win a copy. I’m excited about this book. I really enjoyed the first one because when I visited New Zealand, I got to see a couple of location the films were filmed.

  2. I love that Kara is writing about second chances. We would all be better people if we treated others the way we would like to be treated. I know I have needed a second chance in more than one instance. Thank you for writing Christian books for us to enjoy reading! I enjoyed reading the interview. Thanks for this giveaway.

  3. After reading the interview regarding Kara Isaac’s latest book Can’t Help Falling, I want to read her debut novel Close To You, too. Thank you Ellie for this great opportunity to win Kara’s latest novel. I look forward to seeing more Kiwi authors and reading their stories. Thanks.

  4. What a Great interview! I’ve seen a lot of talk about Kara’s books and they’re on my To Be Read/Reviewed list, but just haven’t gotten to them…might have to just move them up 😉 LOVE hearing behind the scenes of the writing of books…thanks for opportunity to possiibly win the giveaway! 🙂
