Tamara Leigh

Tamara Leigh is a USA Today Bestselling author and holds a Master’s Degree in Speech and Language Pathology.

In 2006, Tamara’s first inspirational contemporary romance, Stealing Adda, was released. In 2008, Perfecting Kate was optioned for a movie and Splitting Harriet won an ACFW “Book of the Year” award. The following year, Faking Grace was nominated for a RITA award. In 2011, Tamara wrapped up her “Southern Discomfort” series with the release of Restless in Carolina.

When not in the middle of being a wife, mother, and cookbook fiend, Tamara  buries her nose in a good book—and her writer’s pen in ink. In 2012, she returned to the historical romance genre with Dreamspell, a medieval time travel romance. Shortly thereafter, she once more invited readers to join her in the middle ages with the “Age of Faith” series.

The following is a November 2015 interview with Tamara.

TamaraTell us a little about yourself.

A little? I am the wife of one, the mother of two, a once-upon-a-time Speech and Language Pathologist, and an award-winning, USA Today bestselling author. I live near Nashville with my husband, sons, a Doberman who bares his teeth not only to threaten the UPS man but to smile, and a feisty Morkie named Maizy Grace who keeps me company during long writing stints. Whew! That took some editing 🙂

What inspired you to become a novelist, and did you always want to write?

Not always. In the beginning, I just wanted to play with my Barbie dolls, but eventually I progressed to make believe on paper. In high school, I began writing book-length works of fiction. Though I dreamed of being a published author, I considered it just that—a dream. Thus, I pursued reality, obtaining a master’s degree in Speech and Language Pathology. Then a beautiful thing happened. Long story short, when my husband and I decided to grow our family from two to three, maybe four, I dusted off that dream in the hope of being able to work out of the home to raise our children. The best part of this long story short: on the day my agent called to tell me Bantam Books was offering me a 4-book contract, I received another call shortly thereafter—from my doctor informing me I was FINALLY pregnant.

head-over-heelsWhat do you think is significant about Christian fiction?

Having written for the general market when I was first published in 1994 and transitioned to the inspirational market in 2006, I believe Christian fiction’s significance lies in giving readers stories that not only provide hours of clean entertainment, but deliver inspiring messages capable of validating and strengthening their faith.

How do you hope your readers react to the stories you write?

Much of the answer to this question is found in the one above. But, additionally, I hope readers smile, laugh, cry, snort, and sigh—perhaps even rage with good cause—with my heroes and heroines. I take that to mean the characters I’ve created aren’t simply what Adda Sinclaire in my novel Stealing Adda calls “POPOs” (people on paper only). They’ve managed to reach their inky fingers up off the page and touch my readers’ emotions.

What responses to your novels have affected you the most and why?

I’ll go back to the transition from writing for the general market to writing for the inspirational market. With those first books, I loved receiving letters from readers who enjoyed my stories of boy meets girl—er, knight meets lady—but I’ve been more deeply touched by readers of my inspirational novels who write to me (emails now, of course) to share how the handling of a character’s crisis of faith helped them deal with their own. Definitely not a POPO, hmm?

age-of-faithHow has being a novelist impacted your relationship with Christ?

Though it took quite a few years for me to answer the call to leave behind the success I had enjoyed in the general market, once I began writing God-honoring stories that allowed me to join my characters on their faith journeys without fear of an editor’s red pen, my own faith went from what seems now like a child’s faith to a faith with substance. Is it mature? Comparatively so, but I hope one day I’ll look back to this day and consider this a child’s faith.

Other than writing great novels, what other goals do you have for your life?

Great novels? Aww, thanks! Since our last little bird (actually, he’s 5’ 10”) flew from the nest this fall and we now have two young men in college, our goal is to continue to provide guidance where they’ll allow it in the hope they will grow into the men God would have them be. Oh, and it would be nice to get them through college with as little debt as possible. As for goals beyond our boys… I really need a haircut. Eek.

ladyWhat do you like to do in your spare time?

What’s that? Oh, yes. I had some of that sprinkled around before I ventured into indie publishing. Not much anymore. I’m not complaining—well, maybe a little. But though indie publishing is quite a bit of work, it’s really not much more than what my traditional publisher was asking of me. Pardon me while I go jump through some hoops.

What can you tell us about your latest novels?

I may have pulled a muscle, but I’m back! My latest novels are inspirational medieval romances, specifically the 5-book Age Of Faith series that begins with The Unveiling (btw, the ebook is currently free on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iBooks Store, and Kobo Books). I’ve also rewritten four of my seven original general market medieval romances into clean reads—so thoroughly I believe the new versions would pass a plagiarism check. Why “clean read” as opposed to inspirational? Though elements of faith are definitely present in Lady At Arms, Lady Of Eve, Lady Of Fire, and Lady Of Conquest, I don’t believe in forcing a message that doesn’t naturally flow from the story. Too, the clean reads are a bit edgier than the inspirationals.

The-FeudWhat stories can your fans expect from you in the days ahead?

I’m currently writing the final scenes of the second book in my new series, The Feud. The first book, Baron Of Godsmere, was the story of Baron Bayard Boursier and Lady Elianor. This December, Baron Of Emberly will tell the story of Baron Magnus Verdun and Lady Thomasin. Also, I’m re-releasing the 3-book Southern Discomfort series originally published with Waterbrook/Multnomah. Leaving Carolina will be available this Thanksgiving.

What would you like to say to your fans in New Zealand, and others worldwide?

Gidday! Choice, bro! Umm, am I in the ballpark? Silliness aside, thank you readers for joining me on my writing journey. It wouldn’t be half as inspiring, exciting, or fun without you.

Do you have any parting words?

Gidday! Choice, bro! Okay, before I outwear my welcome, thank you, Ellie. It’s been lovely.

WRITER’S BLOCK, NIBBLED NAILS, PLAGIARISM, OH MY!
AND DID I MENTION ROMANCE?

Life for Adda Sinclaire, New York Times best-selling author and historical romance writer extraordinaire, reads more like a country song than a breathless, bodice-bursting affair. For starters, she has no romance in her own life. That might have something to do with the fact that her husband—correction, ex-husband—ran off with Stick Woman, whom everyone knew would never be more than a mid-list author anyway. To add insult to injury (and another verse to the country song), her ex not only took their dog but gave it to Stick Woman. If that isn’t enough, Adda has come down with a horrible case of writer’s block, finds herself gifted with a Bible that is determined to speak to her, and is the unwitting target of a romance cover model’s misdirected advances. Just when she catches her breath—and quite possibly the eye of a certain fabulously good-looking man (ahem…her new editor)—her arch-nemesis gives the pot one final stir.

NOTE: Stealing Adda, an inspirational novel, was originally released by NavPress in paperback. Featuring a new cover, it is now available for the first time as an ebook.

12th century England: Two men vie for the throne: King Stephen the usurper and young Duke Henry the rightful heir. Amid civil and private wars, alliances are forged, loyalties are betrayed, families are divided, and marriages are made.

For four years, Lady Annyn Bretanne has trained at arms with one end in mind—to avenge her brother’s murder as God has not deemed it worthy to do. Disguised as a squire, she sets off to exact revenge on a man known only by his surname, Wulfrith. But when she holds his fate in her hands, her will wavers and her heart whispers that her enemy may not be an enemy after all.

Baron Wulfrith, renowned trainer of knights, allows no women within his walls for the distraction they breed. What he never expects is that the impetuous young man sent to train under him is a woman who seeks his death—nor that her unveiling will test his faith and distract the warrior from his purpose.

THE FEUD
England, 1308. Three noblemen secretly gather to ally against their treacherous lord. But though each is elevated to a baron in his own right and given a portion of his lord’s lands, jealousy and reprisals lead to a twenty-five year feud, pitting family against family, passing father to son.

THE DECREE
England, 1333. The chink in Baron Boursier’s armor is his fondness for a lovely face. When it costs him half his sight and brands him as one who abuses women, he vows to never again be “blinded” by beauty. Thus, given the choice between forfeiting his lands and wedding one of his enemies to end their feud, he chooses as his betrothed the lady said to be plain of face, rejecting the lady rumored to be most fair.

THE ENEMY
On the eve of the deadline to honor the king’s decree of marriage, the fair Elianor of Emberly takes matters into her own hands. Determined none will suffer marriage to the man better known as The Boursier, she sets in motion her plan to imprison him long enough to ensure his barony is forfeited. But when all goes awry and her wrathful enemy compels her to wed him to save his lands, she discovers he is either much changed or much maligned. And the real enemy is one who lurks in their midst. One bent on keeping the feud burning.

THEY SAY YOU CAN TAKE THE GIRL OUT OF THE SOUTH, BUT YOU CAN’T TAKE THE SOUTH OUT OF THE GIRL. THIS GIRL BEGS TO DIFFER.

Piper Wick left her hometown of Pickwick, North Carolina twelve years ago, shook the dust off her feet, ditched her drawl and her family name, and made a new life for herself as a high-powered public relations consultant in Los Angeles. She’s even engaged to be engaged to the picture-perfect U.S. Congressman Grant Spangler.

Now all of Piper’s hard-won happiness is threatened by a reclusive uncle’s bout of conscience. In the wake of a health scare, Uncle Obadiah Pickwick has decided to change his will, leaving money to make amends for four generations’ worth of family misdeeds. But that will reveal all the Pickwick’s secrets, including Piper’s.

Though Piper arrives in Pickwick primed for battle, she is unprepared for Uncle Obe’s rugged, blue-eyed gardener. So just who is Axel Smith? Why does he think making amends is about more than just making restitution? And why, oh why, can’t she stay on task? With God’s help, Piper is about to discover that although good PR might smooth things over, only the truth will set her free.
