RachelHauckTell us a little about yourself.

I’m a wife, daughter, sister, friend, lover of Jesus. I’ve been writing full time for 11 years after spending 17 years in the corporate software world. I’m a worship leader and pet lover.

What inspired you to become a novelist, and did you always want to write?

How did I become a novelist? Some days I think it was a miracle! Ha! I’ve always wanted to be a writer but becoming published seemed like such an impossible mountain to climb. But once I started learning the craft and networking within the writing and publishing community, I was published within a few years. I read a lot, looked at what publishers were selling, looked at what genres sold well. I considered what kind of stories I loved to read and starting putting ideas on paper.

I really had a great break in 2000 when a friend, who wrote category romances for Heartsong Presents, asked me to write with her. She opened the door for me to prove I could do it. I’ve not looked back.

hauck-lcrWhat do you think is significant about Christian fiction?

I think Christian fiction brings a level of truth and hope about life, love and God. More than the expressed words used to tell a story, it’s the heart of the author that shines through. Reading a novel by a Christian author, no matter what the story, leaves me feeling hopeful, like I’m ready to live well and love well for Him. For my family, friends and community.

hauck-nashvilleHow do you hope your readers react to the stories you write?

I hope they are entertained and inspired to live well and love well. I believe the Holy Spirit can speak to the reader’s heart through the stories authors tell. I’m always asking, “Lord, what story do you want told?”

I was on a tight deadline in 2014 and had to come up with a novella idea. I asked the Lord, “Who is the heroine.” He said, “Her name is Ginger and she doesn’t believe she’s beautiful.” I started taking notes, you know! 🙂 I said, “Who’s the guy?” He said, “Tom, he’s going to show Ginger she’s beautiful.” That became the novella, A Brush With Love.

So, I hope readers know how beautiful they are at the end of that story.

That’s one example. But at some point during the writing process I feel the heart of God for the characters, for the story, which I know translates to the reader.

What responses to your novels have affected you the most and why?

I love, love, love hearing from readers. A lot of middle age women have written or spoken to me about the Royal Wedding Series which might seem like books for younger women, but they felt hope after reading the books. They felt they were princesses, that they were beautiful. Some were still waiting for their prince to come.

hauck-wedding-dressHearing from international readers impacts me deeply. I heard from a woman in Poland who said she’d given up on reading the Gospels, she felt the Bible didn’t have anything for her any longer, but after reading The Wedding Dress, she sat and prayed for a long time. She felt inspired in her walk with God.

I heard from a woman in Indonesia who read one of the small category romances I wrote early in my career, Lambert’s Pride. She said she was inspired to love her husband unconditionally and would encourage the women in her church to do the same.

Those testimonies make me weep. I couldn’t have reached those women any other way. But a story moved their hearts. It’s amazing.

How has being a novelist impacted your relationship with Christ?

You can’t be a novelist in the Christian market and not be on your knees in prayer. I love my job but writing is a solitary life, even with the internet, and coming up with new, fresh ideas takes time and inspiration. Insecurities set in. Doubt tries to conquer my heart. I need the Holy Spirit to work in and through me. Not just for stories, but to make me more like Christ.

One time I was frustrated with a story and I said to my husband, as well as a friend, Susan May Warren, “I suck at this!”

As usual, my husband and my friend kicked me back into play, told me I could do it.

hauck-rwcI was leading worship the next night and as the evening ended, I stretched out on the stage before the Lord, calming my heart before Him. This loud command reverberated in my heart. “You are never allowed to tell Me you suck again.”

GASP! “I didn’t say that to you.”

He said, “You said it to your husband, you said it to Susie, you said it to Me.”

Wow, that was a meaningful lesson for me. God has gifted me, blessed me and called me to a work. How dare I tell Him I’m not good at it!

And, gotta be honest, publishing does not come without it’s disappointments. The hard times really pressed me to lean into the Lord and get His heart for the situation and me.

Other than writing great novels, what other goals do you have for your life?

Still working on the “writing great novels” one but I’d love to be the best wife and friend I can be. The best sister and daughter. I want to be a good worship leader and lead my team into being all they can be. I want to love more. Look like Jesus. That requires a lot of death to self. The Lord will have to increase in me. I’ve told Him to “Come on in!”

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I love sports and watching Netflix with my hubby. I don’t have a bunch of hobbies. I want to do more photography just haven’t figured out how to do that yet… Have to be more creative. Of course, I love to read.

hauck-wedding-chapelWhat can you tell us about your latest novels?

The Wedding Chapel is about a sixty year old chapel that’s never been used. The story delves into the lives of Jimmy and Colette, Taylor and Jack, and the healing power of love, as well as loves enduring power.

What stories can your fans expect from you in the days ahead?

The Wedding Shop and A Royal Christmas Wedding are next. I’m very excited about these two stories!

What would you like to say to your fans in New Zealand, and others worldwide?

Ah, blessings on you! I love New Zealand and am grateful to speak to readers there. One of your own, Kara Isaac has a book coming out soon, Close to You. Be sure to check her out! I love to hear from readers. Stop by my Facebook Page and leave a message!

Do you have any parting words?

The Lord is good. His love truly never fails. I ran into a physical issue last year and I wondered if I’d ever write again. I wept before the Lord, asking anybody and everybody with breath to pray for me. My trial ended after about six months and I can just say how sweet and kind the Lord is. He hears all who call upon Him. Stick with it. Don’t give up!

A lonely wedding chapel built as a tribute to lost love just might hold the long-awaited secret to hope and reconciliation.

For sixty years, the wedding chapel has stood silent and empty. Retired football hall-of-famer Jimmy “Coach” Westbrook built the chapel by hand, stone by stone, for his beautiful and beloved Collette Greer, whom he lost so many years ago. The chapel is a sanctuary for his memories, a monument to true love, and a testament to his survival of the deepest pain and loss.

Photographer Taylor Branson left her hometown of Heart’s Bend, Tennessee to make a new life for herself in New York. Taylor had lots to run away from, not least of all a family history of broken promises and broken dreams. Love catches Taylor off guard when she falls for Jack Forester, a successful advertising executive, and their whirlwind romance leads to an elopement – and then to second guesses. Jack, in spite of his very real love for Taylor, is battling his own demons and struggles to show her his true self and the depths of his love for her.

When Taylor takes a photography assignment in Heart’s Bend, she is thrown back into her own past and encounters family secrets buried deep beneath the sands of time. And when Taylor and Coach’s journeys collide, they each rediscover the heartbeat of their own dreams as they learn that the love they long to hold is well worth waiting for.
