LIS-1Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a mother of three, so I spend my days picking up, cleaning, home schooling, playing, and writing. My husband pastors a small church in a remote area of northern Michigan near Lake Superior. We get to see a lot of wildlife like bear, wolves, coyotes, bald eagles, and deer. Living so close to the lake, we also get a lot of snow every winter–about 200 inches on average.

What inspired you to become a novelist, and did you always want to write?

I’ve always loved reading, but I didn’t think about writing my own novel until after I was married and had one child. I’d just been through a miscarriage and needed something to fill my time, so I started writing. Penning novels helped fill the emotional hurt left by the miscarriage.

What do you think is significant about Christian fiction?

I love how Christian fiction allows Biblical principles to be explored through stories. Much like Christ used parables in the New Testament, Christian fiction can show Biblical truths in a way that people easily relate to.

LIS-2How do you hope your readers react to the stories you write?

I build every one of my novels around a biblical theme and Bible verse. Love’s Every Whisper was built around “When a man’s ways please the Lord, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.” When readers pick up that novel, I hope they see that verse played out. What obligations do Christians have to behave rightly, even when dealing with an enemy? How far can that principle go? Of course, each novel has a different theme, but I always hope readers come away with a better understanding of biblical truths after reading one of my books.

What responses to your novels have affected you the most and why?

I enjoy hearing from every single reader. The fact that someone read one of my stories and enjoyed it so much they decided to contact me is always humbling and rewarding. But the letters that touch me most are when a reader shares a personal struggle they’ve been through and how my story helped them somehow. I remember getting an email about my second novel, The Wyoming Heir, in which the reader said she was going through some family difficulties, and the family strife I had in my novel really helped her to see there was hope for her personal situation if she looked to God.

Love's Unfading Light

How has being a novelist impacted your relationship with Christ?

It drives me deeper into the Bible, that’s for sure. My husband is a pastor, so sometimes I cheat a bit and ask him how he would counsel someone who’s fighting with a long-time enemy or someone who’s family is asking her to be deceitful and cover up sin. Once I have a theme for a novel in mind, I find myself scouring the Bible for verses I can sprinkle into my novels and truths that I can have my characters illustrate. Love’s Sure Dawn deals a lot with family and the temporary sacrifices people often have to make in order to have a healthy, God-honoring family relationship, so I did a good bit of studying on family as I wrote the novel.

Other than being a novelist, what other goals do you have for your life?

My biggest goal at the moment is to raise my kids for God. It’s such a huge task, and to be honest, it seems rather impossible at times. I try to focus on instilling biblical principles in my children’s hearts, rather than just getting their outward conformity. Sure, my kids can sit still and smile and be polite at church, but do they long to go to church so they can learn about God? Those are the things I focus on. I also have a secret dream of picking up photography in another decade or so, after my kids are out of the house and I have more time.

Love's Every Whisper

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Read! Yes, seriously. I never watch TV because I’d rather be reading. I’m still as much of a bookworm as ever. I also love spending time outdoors with my family. We live in a really beautiful area, and now that two of my kids are older, it’s easy to go to the beach for an afternoon in the summer or go snowmobiling in the winter. There are lots of great hiking trails by us that run along Lake Superior, and we use those as well.

What can you tell us about your latest novels?

Right now I’m in the middle of writing my Eagle Harbor Series. I’m absolutely ecstatic about this series for a couple reasons. First, it’s set near where I live, in a real-life, remote town on Lake Superior. Second, I’ve tried to put some of the homey, small-town feel that’s in a lot of contemporary book series into my historical Eagle Harbor setting. I’m enjoying playing with the small town dynamics where some of the older characters remember all the trouble my main characters got into as children and so forth. Having the town be remote and only accessible by ship really seems to give the series a strong small-town feel, and I’ve certainly had a lot of fun writing these novels.

Love's Beginning

What stories can your fans expect from you in the days ahead?

I have the first three novels in my Eagle Harbor Series out. (Or coming out very soon. Book 3 releases in November.) But I intend for the series to be seven or eight books long. So readers can expect more small-town historical romances set in Eagle Harbor, Michigan. While each novel has its own complete love story, I have some smaller plot threads and recurring characters that keep coming back in every story. Those who’ve read some of the Eagle Harbor novels will know that the series was also built around the Cummings family, who lost their father in a tragic drowning accident on Lake Superior. Each of the Cummings children have dealt differently with their father’s death, and there will certainly be more about them as the series continues.

What would you like to say to your fans in New Zealand, and others worldwide?

Thank you so much for your interest in my novels! It really is humbling to think that my books are so widely available, and I really love the thought of connecting with other Christians across the globe (whether you’re reading my novels or not). The communication opportunities we have available today are amazing, and I’m so thankful to people like Ellie Whyte, Rel Mollet, and others who have started websites and blogs that help connect writers in one country with readers in another.

Love's Sure Dawn

Do you have any parting words?

Thank you so much to Ellie for having me on Soul Inspirationz. Thank you to everyone reading this interview for taking the time to do so, and a special thank you to all my readers for faithfully buying my books. You are the people who allow me to keep working as an author and who drive me to keep pushing harder and reaching farther with each story that I write. I hate the thought of letting a single one of you down, and please know that I work very hard to make sure each new novel is just as good as–and hopefully a little bit better than–the last.

Tressa Danell is finished with men–from the wastrel who left her a widow, to the smelly trapper who keeps proposing, to the banker who wants to repossess her bakery. Every hour is spent working to pay off her late husband’s debt and keep a roof over her son’s head, though it’s doubtful she can do both for very long. But one thing’s certain–she’ll never be beholden to a man again.

Tired of living in a small town that blames him for actions his father committed ten years ago, Mac Oakton is scheduled to leave Eagle Harbor. So why does the pretty widow at the bakery keep tugging at his heart? He can’t get involved in her predicament when he’ll only be around for two more weeks.

But when Tressa’s burdens overwhelm her, they both face a decision. Can Mac set his own plans aside to help? And can Tressa accept his support if that means giving up her independence … and being obligated to a man again?

Read about the day Elijah first falls in love with Victoria in the Eagle Harbor short story, Love’s Beginning.

As a ten-year-old boy, Elijah sees Gilbert Sinclair bully the other school children day in and day out. As far as Elijah figures, it’s going to be a long school year if somebody doesn’t show the rich kid a thing or two, so it might as well be him. If only his sister wasn’t around to mess up his plans.

And why does he care so much what Victoria, the pretty girl with a house fancier than Gilbert’s, thinks of their fight?

Love’s Beginning is a 12 page short story. It can be read as a standalone or as an extension of Love’s Every Whisper, which is Elijah and Victoria’s full length novel.

No matter how hard she tries to help, Rebekah Cummings always ends up causing more problems than she solves. This time, though, things will be different. She’ll find a way to pay her family’s debts, even if doing so requires leaving Eagle Harbor. Maybe then they’ll finally accept her.

Gilbert Sinclair is going to marry an heiress. With his latest business venture sunk at the bottom of Lake Superior, he needs money to replace the steamship he lost, so he heads to Chicago where his father’s business connections should land him a suitable wife. Like most things in his meticulously planned life, everything goes as expected—until he discovers Rebekah Cummings working as the new cook on his ship.

Though forgotten feelings might swirl between Rebekah and Gilbert, so do the storms of expectation. Gilbert can’t afford to pursue a working class woman—no matter how badly he might want to. And Rebekah well remembers the pain she endured the last time Gilbert broke her heart. Should she step aside and watch him marry a stranger for nothing more than money…or can she convince him he deserves so much more?
