Tell us a little about yourself.

Starlight-TexasI am originally from New England and have been married to my husband for 20 years. We are empty-nesters with a 25-year-old son and 23-year-old daughter, and we live in Central Texas. We have an Australian Shepherd/blue heeler mix named Mocha, who thinks she is a tiny teacup poodle, and two cats named Kris Kringle and Holly Berry who think they are dogs. We have two absolutely exquisite young granddaughters with one more on the way at the end of August. When I am not writing fiction, I am the managing editor for the main newspaper in our city. I am never short of fiction ideas because of the very-real characters I meet. I love coffee, good chocolate, trying new recipes, and am always up for a Texas road trip.

What inspired you to become a novelist, and did you always want to write?

sowell-romance-collectionsI have always enjoyed creative writing since elementary school, but during my high school and university years, other writing like papers and assignments took the forefront. It wasn’t until I was in my late 20s I decided to pick up creative writing again, on a whim after reading some good (and not-so-good in my opinion) books. I received my first fiction contract in 2005 and have been publishing since. I’ve written for Barbour Publishing, Harlequin/Heartsong Presents, and Abingdon Press.

What do you think is significant about Christian fiction?

To me, it is the worldview that brings a difference, or it should. I believe Christian fiction shouldn’t be about perfect people or circumstances, but should always end with hope, regardless of what characters have gone through.

How do you hope your readers react to the stories you write?

I want them to come away hopeful from my stories and feel as if they’ve met some “new friends” they wouldn’t mind visiting again.

What responses to your novels have affected you the most and why?

sowell-tempests-courseThe responses I get from shut-ins mean a lot to me. I’ve heard things like, “I don’t get out much” or “I can’t travel, but I can through your books.” That’s one of my goals whenever I write; I want readers to feel like they’ve visited the places I write about. Also, one special comment to me comes from a reader whose sister – not a Christian – picked up some of my books. “She told me she’s thinking about God in ways she hasn’t before when reading your stories.”

How has being a novelist impacted your relationship with Christ?

I think being a novelist has kept me mindful of those spiritual lessons in everyday life, those circumstances that come my way and how sometimes the biggest reason for those circumstances is to draw me closer to Him.

Other than being a novelist, what other goals do you have for your life?

I want to make a positive impact on my community, especially where the arts and literacy are concerned. Since becoming a writer for and now editor of my city’s newspaper, I have learned more about the community than I did in the first 15 years of living in this area. I’ve learned one person can definitely make a difference if they step up and help.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Seasons-in-PinecraftI had to think hard about this one, because life has a way of swallowing up spare time. But when I do get some free time on a Saturday, I like to take day trips with my husband. In Central Texas, there is always something new to explore.

What can you tell us about your latest novels?

This year I’ve been working on some novella projects. My most recent is called Time And Tide, and it’s one of nine stories in a box set called Splash!. Splash! has a wonderfully eclectic set of writers. In addition to a few U.S. writers, Splash! has work by Canadian, U.K., Australian, and one South African writer. Our stories surround a common theme – summer at the water, whether that’s a beach, lake, ocean…you get the idea. 🙂

What stories can your fans expect from you in the days ahead?

splashI am busily working on some Christmas novellas, both contemporary and historical, set in Wyoming and Connecticut. Also, I have a mystery series in the works, but no release date for that just yet.

What would you like to say to your fans in New Zealand, and others worldwide?

Hello, world! I’m thankful for the technology that brings all of us together. It helps the big, big world feel a lot smaller, doesn’t it? What part of the world do you think deserves some stories told about it?

Do you have any parting words?

Thanks for reading this today. And thanks to Ellie for having me as a guest.

Amish widower Jacob Miller believes it was a mistake to visit the Amish village of Pinecraft for winter vacation, especially after his daughter is struck by a car. Stranded in Sarasota until his daughter recovers, Jacob grows increasingly wary of events that unfold in his unfamiliar surroundings—including the strange curiosity of Englischer Natalie Bennett.

Natalie never thought her circus career as an aerial silks artist would end with a blown-out knee at the age of 25. She also never knew her late mother had a secret—that she was once Amish.

When Natalie meets the Millers at the Sarasota hospital, she is attracted to their warm hospitality and simple ways—and soon wonders if they can help her find her mother’s family. As Jacob and Natalie fall in love, their worlds collide. Will their differences tear them apart? Or will their love be strong enough to blend their clashing cultures?

Betsy Yoder lives with her great aunt in Sarasota’s Pinecraft neighborhood, far from her family in Ohio. Heartbroken by a man who left her—and the Order—to marry someone else, Betsy instead pours her time and energy into her bakery, offering the village of Pinecraft delicious desserts from her Amish heritage, and is content in her hard-working yet peaceful life.

Enter the formerly Amish Thaddeus Zook, a pastry chef who has moved to Pinecraft after working in restaurants among the Englisch. While Betsy nurses a hesitant heart, Thaddeus shows a similar hesitancy about rejoining an Amish community. Though neither can deny the attraction between them, Thaddeus is hiding a past that could threaten their future together. Betsy has lost one love already; dare she risk loving another who has adopt Englisch ways? Or will Thad listen to the call of the open road and move on again . . . without the love of his life?

Rochelle Keim has lived in Pinecraft for almost twenty years among her Mennonite brethren and the Amish of Sarasota. Unlike the snowbirds who visit Pinecraft from the north, Rochelle is a year-round resident of the unique Plain community. She’s quiet, content, and keenly adept at keeping her past firmly tucked away. Feeling unsettled as she nears her fortieth birthday, she decides to return to nursing school, a dream she gave up long ago during a painful time she dares not remember.

Her past decides to make itself present when Silas Fry, Rochelle’s former love, moves to Pinecraft. Silas spent the past two decades working as a missionary pilot, but that all changed with the sudden loss of his wife, Belinda—Rochelle’s childhood best friend. Now both Rochelle and Silas are on a collision course with their past, and the reunited couple must decide if they’re trying to resurrect a dead romance, or if the two very different people whose paths have crossed can make a new life together.
