Lyn Cote grew up loving books. Her favorite night of the week was Friday night, when the Bookmobile came to her neighborhood in Illinois. She’d spend those two hours chatting with the driver of the Bookmobile and the librarian and making the big decision of the week — which books to check out!

In those distant days, children were limited in how many books they could check out. Lyn could only take home six a week — and there were so many to choose from. Her favorites were Cotton in my Sack by Lois Lenski, The Little House series and the One of a Kind Family series. Later, she discovered Georgette Heyer’s Regency romances! This love of books led to a desire to write.

Now, Lyn spends her days writing books that show the power of divine as well as human love. Her homepage blog features “Strong Women, Brave Stories.” Her nest is empty and she and her real life hero, her husband, have more and more time to spend together in their home on a lake in the lovely northwoods. And books are still dear to her heart.

The following is a July 2015 interview with Lyn.

Tell us a little about yourself.

blessed-assuranceI am happily married, a mom and grandmother and I have two cats.

What inspired you to become a novelist, and did you always want to write?

Yes, I always wanted to write. I wrote poetry in high school and college and then I taught school and then I became a mom. When my daughter was 13 months old, I started my first novel.

What do you think is significant about Christian fiction?

I think it’s significant because each story finds the readers it was meant for. A writer never knows which story will reach and touch which hearts.

How do you hope your readers react to the stories you write?

Not every story is for every reader. Not every author is for every readers. So I hope my stories reach those who will enjoy them and feel uplifted.

What responses to your novels have affected you the most and why?

northern-intrigueMany times I discover that a message I never intended is in a novel. Or at least a reader finds one I never intended. Once I received an email from Nigerian woman who after reading one of my novellas, had decided to marry a man who had been courting her. That kind of panicked me because I didn’t write it to persuade someone to marry! I mean–I don’t know these people!

How has being a novelist impacted your relationship with Christ?

I find it fascinating how he uses my words and how far they go. I check my website statistics and discover that people from all over the world are visiting my website. It’s like being a missionary at my laptop.

Other than being a novelist, what other goals do you have for your life?

women-of-ivy-manorI have pretty much achieved my bucket list. Now I’m just trying to be a good mom, mother in law, grandma, wife and friend.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I knit and do lunch. (My cats interfere with the former. They like to sit on my yarn)

What can you tell us about your latest novels?

My Quaker Bride series (Book 1: Honor (September 1, 2014), Book 2: Blessing (out July 1, 2015) and Faith (spring 2016) delve into issues that are 150 years old and yet pop up on the evening news. This series chronicles a family caught up in the fight against slavery and the fight for human rights including women’s rights. The historical research has been so interesting and so exhausting.

What stories can your fans expect from you in the days ahead?

texas-star-of-destinyI’m working on a new contemporary series for Love Inspired Romance and I’m writing a historical Christmas novella.

What would you like to say to your fans in New Zealand, and others worldwide?

HEY! HOW ARE YOU? 🙂 I’m happy that ebooks now mean that most of my more recent books are available down under and worldwide. We live in amazing times–if I could only keep up with them.

Do you have any parting words?

Be kind and tell the truth.

When unexpected circumstances leave Honor Penworthy destitute after the death of her grandfather, she is forced to leave her Maryland plantation—and the slaves she hoped to free—and seek refuge with a distant relative. With no marketable skills, her survival hinges on a marriage arranged through the Quaker community to local glass artisan Samuel Cathwell. Samuel is drawn to Honor, but he has been unwilling to open his heart to anyone since scarlet fever took his hearing as a child.

A move west brings the promise of a fresh start, but nothing in Honor’s genteel upbringing has prepared her for the rigors of frontier life with Samuel. Nevertheless, her tenacity and passion sweep her into important winds of change, and she becomes increasingly—though secretly—involved in the Underground Railroad. Samuel suspects Honor is hiding something, but will uncovering the truth confirm his worst fears or truly bring them together as man and wife?

Set against the backdrop of dramatic and pivotal moments in American history, the Quaker Brides series chronicles the lives of three brave heroines, fighting to uphold their principles of freedom while navigating the terrain of faith, family, and the heart.

An impetuous love swept Blessing Brightman away from the Quaker community, into the highest ranks of Cincinnati society. But behind the glitter of ballroom and parlor, her spirit slowly eroded in an increasingly dangerous marriage. Widowed young, determined never to lose her independence again, Blessing reclaimed her faith and vowed to use her influence to fight for women’s rights and abolition.

Gerard Ramsay, scion of a wealthy Boston family, arrives in Cincinnati hoping to escape his father’s clutches with a strategy that will gain him independence. His plan is soon complicated, however, by the enchanting widow. Never before has a woman spoken as if she’s his equal―or challenged him to consider the lives of others.

In a city nearly ablaze with racial tensions quickly dividing the country, can two people worlds apart possibly find common ground?
