Lisa Phillips

Lisa Phillips is a British-born, tea drinking, guitar playing, wife and mom of two and an Airedale puppy.

Lisa favors high-stakes stories of mayhem and disaster where you can find made-for-each-other love that always ends in happily ever after. And she understands that faith is a work-in-progress more exciting than any fiction.

The following is an August 2015 interview with Lisa.

Tell us a little about yourself.

lisa-phillipsProbably the most notable thing is the fact I’m British. I grew up in England, all my family is there. I live in Idaho now, and my kids have American accents but I try to retain as much of my British-ness as possible. In 2003 I went to Calvary Chapel Bible College in California and then graduated from the extension campus in Seigen, Germany. After that I married my husband, and we moved to Idaho. This summer my husband quit his steady-paying, awesome-insurance-plan, career and went on staff at our church in music ministry. We lead worship together regularly, and this year for the first time both of our kids will be in some kind of schooling this year — so I’m greatly looking forward to the writing time I’ll have.

What inspired you to become a novelist, and did you always want to write?

Heavens, no. My mum says trying to get me to read a book as a kid was painful. Hehe.
It was actually at Bible College that someone handed me Redeeming Love. It made a huge impact on me that fiction could be so powerful, and that the Lord could use a story to speak to me about His love. It was actually at my graduation ceremony that the director said, “This is Lisa, she’s a writer.” I had no idea! After I got married I couldn’t work yet – I was waiting for paperwork to say I could – so I took some online courses through the Christian Writers Guild. I learned SO MUCH, but I groan at the stuff I submitted to those instructors. I’m a better writer now, but I still don’t really know where to put commas. 🙂

What do you think is significant about Christian fiction?

phillips-LI-SuspenseThe world is full of books and movies that entertain, but the beauty of Christian fiction is that we can redeem that entertainment in a way it touches people for good. I love the fun and the excitement of what I write. It’s not heavy, though it gets rough for my characters sometimes, but there is always a happy ending–and they grow closer to the Lord through their experiences. There’s a takeaway in Christian fiction that can have an eternal impact in the reader’s life, and I LOVE to show people what God has been teaching me through the stories I write.

How do you hope your readers react to the stories you write?

First and foremost I hope they enjoy them–because I don’t like to be bored. Life is too short for boring books. I hope they get that rush that keeps them turning pages because they just HAVE to know how on earth the characters will get out of this one. I hope they love them as much as I do, and – as I’ve said – that they see something in the story about the Lord.

What responses to your novels have affected you the most and why?

phillips-denver-fbiLoving a book is one thing, but the notes I’ve had that touched me most are deeper than that. One lady wrote to me about my Love Inspired Suspense book Double Agent, because the main character is African-American. She thanked me because he was the hero. Being brave shouldn’t be determined by the color of a person’s skin.

How has being a novelist impacted your relationship with Christ?

It makes me dig deeper, to grasp things more clearly, to be able to present truth so it can be understood. There’s a responsibility to show Christ working, but it has to be real to me before it can be real to the reader. Sometimes the spiritual element is something I want to say, and sometimes it’s something I need to wrestle with and figure out. There’s no half measures with this, because readers will notice. So whatever the message, I have to “get” it first. And that’s the challenge.

Other than being a novelist, what other goals do you have for your life?

phillips-love-on-the-runTo raise my kids to hunger for Jesus, and to be – you know – actual human beings. (That’s a tough one sometimes!) Also I want to have an impact for Christ in the world through the worship ministry God has called my husband and me to. I think, because I’ve moved countries, it gives me a wider mindset that I a lot of people miss. I think globally in terms of the Kingdom, and I know God is going to use that. I just don’t know how yet.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Spare time?
Haha. Let’s see… If I’m not writing, I’m usually walking my puppy, practicing guitar, doing worship, reading a book or occasionally watching good TV. I also like to run, as I can stick my tablet on the treadmill and read.

What can you tell us about your latest novels?

My writing time is split between Love Inspired Suspense (I have one coming out in Sept, and two next year) and my WITSEC Town Series. I’ve just published the box set of books 1-3 of the WITSEC Town Series and a short story. I LOVE THIS SERIES! It’s so fun, and my readers seem to love the characters as much as I do. It’s about a secret Witness Protection town called Sanctuary that is hidden in the Idaho mountains that’s full of bad guys, innocent victims, former assassins, liars, cheaters, and mafia hitmen. I never know what’s going to happen next! So far we’ve had murder, more murder, explosions, a bomb, I’ve killed the president, and I nearly blew up the town. At this point two of my characters are lost in Idaho and I have no idea how they’re going to get home.

What stories can your fans expect from you in the days ahead?

phillips-witsecUp next will be book 4, which is Bolton and Nadia Marie’s book if you know the series. That will be out later this year. Next year I’m planning for book 5, where my studly farmer/pastor will find the woman of his dreams (and someone will attempt a hostile takeover of the town). After that I’ll wrap up the series with a related story about a character who everyone wants to know what the mystery is surrounding him, and maybe even see him fall in love: Ben. I can’t wait to write that one.

What would you like to say to your fans in New Zealand, and others worldwide?

Keep being awesome! If you guys didn’t like my books, I’d have to get a real job. (Eeew.) So I’ll keep having fun writing them, and you guys enjoy reading!

Do you have any parting words?

Thank you so much for having me on here! I love talking about my books because I enjoy being a writer so much. If you’re so inclined, I would love prayer. That God continues to draw me on the path He has for me, and that I honor Him with everything I do. Pray for my mama heart as both my littlies head off to school this year.
