Jean C. Gordon

Jean C. Gordon is an author of Love Inspired romance novels, and a professional financial planner and editor for a financial publisher. Jean is as at home writing retirement- and investment-planning advice as she is writing romance novels, but finds novels a lot more fun.

She and her college-sweetheart husband tried the city life in Los Angeles, but quickly returned home to their native Upstate New York. They share a 170-year-old farmhouse just south of Albany, NY, with their daughter and son-in-law, two grandchildren, and a menagerie of pets. Their son lives nearby. While Jean creates stories, her family grows organic fruits and vegetables and tends the livestock de jour.

Although writing and family don’t leave her a lot of spare time, Jean likes to give back when she can. She and her husband team-taught a seventh-and-eighth-grade Sunday school class for several years and currently serve on her church’s Evangelism Committee. She also shares her love of books with others by volunteering at the church’s Book Nook.

The following is an April 2015 interview with Jean.

Tell us a little about yourself.

Small-Town Sweethearts
Small-Town Sweethearts

In addition to writing novels for Love Inspired Romance, I’m a financial planner and writer. I love numbers and spreadsheets as much as I love words. I also love roller coasters and am partial to historical novels. I’m married to my college sweetheart. We share a 175+ year-old farmhouse in Upstate New York with my daughter and her family. I have a small flock of chickens, and my son-in-law used to raise pastured pigs. Our son lives close by.

What inspired you to become a novelist, and did you always want to write?

I’ve always written, so I guess I’ve always wanted to write. My first paid publication was an essay I wrote as a junior high school student about my family’s Christmas traditions. It appeared in the Sunday supplement to the Buffalo (NY) Evening News. I was paid $10. I wrote for my high school and college newspapers and for the Batavia (NY) Daily News and The Montebello (CA) News while a college student. I got my start writing novels by reviewing romance novels. I hit a point where I thought, I could write a novel, and I did.

What do you think is significant about Christian fiction?

Small-Town Dad
Small-Town Dad
Small-Town Mom
Small-Town Mom

I think Christian fiction provides a haven in the often crazy world we live in — and not just for Christian readers.

How do you hope your readers react to the stories you write?

I want them to come away with a warm satisfied feeling.

What responses to your novels have affected you the most and why?

When people say that my story has made a difference in their lives. Then, I know I’m doing what God has charged me to do.

How has being a novelist impacted your relationship with Christ?

It has definitely strengthened it. I’ve become a lot more diligent in my Bible studies since I switched from writing sweet romance to inspirational romance.

Other than being a novelist, what other goals do you have for your life?

Small-Town Midwife
Small-Town Midwife

I’d like to visit Scotland, where my mother’s family and husband’s family are from and Prague, where my father’s parents’ came from. My son-in-law and I also plan to renovate our old house, starting this spring.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

With my full-time financial writing job and writing novels, I haven’t had much spare time the past few years. But that’s changing. I recently left my day job to write full-time at home. So, in my newly found spare time, I plan to read more, hike, spend more time with my family, and volunteer more at The Book Nook, a used book mission project at my church.

What can you tell us about your latest novels?

My Love Inspired books are all contemporary family-centered romances set in a tiny town on Paradox Lake in the Adirondack Mountains of Northern NY.

What stories can your fans expect from you in the days ahead?

Winning the Teacher's Heart
Winning the Teacher’s Heart

I’m writing a new series for Love Inspired about three brothers — The Donnelly Brothers . . . Hometown boys make good and find love. The series is also set in Paradox Lake. The first one, Winning the Teacher’s Heart, is a May 2015 release. The second, Holiday Homecoming, is a Christmas story that will be out in December. I’m just starting the third one.

What would you like to say to your fans in New Zealand and around the world?

I have fans in New Zealand? 🙂 Keep reading and God Bless.

Do you have any parting words?

Anyone who would like to receive my author newsletter (four to six a year) can sign up on my website www.JeanCGordon.com.

Besides, he has secrets of his own, and he can’t risk Autumn getting close enough to uncover them. Yet despite all their reservations, working beside each other doesn’t feel like work at all — …it feels like home.
