Gail Sattler
Gail Sattler

Gail Sattler is the author of numerous novels, novellas, gift books, cookbooks and devotions. She is a longstanding member of East Ridge Community Fellowship, a Mennonite Brethren church. She lives and writes in Vancouver, B.C., Canada.

Gail is a wife, mother, writer, and musician, and the order of those things will depend on what day it is. She leads a busy life, with music affiliations in a jazz band and string orchestra, as well as writing, which is her passion. She wrote her first book back in middle school on a clackety old manual typewriter. Her writing has changed a lot since then. Now Gail writes romantic comedy, and most of the books she’s written in the last few years are part of a series. Gail loves to continue a story, to make a new book with the story of a minor character from a previous story.

When Gail isn’t writing, she loves to take pictures. Her primary targets, err, volunteers, are usually her family, pets, friends, and bandmates.

The following is an August 2015 interview with Gail.

Tell us a little about yourself.

Gail Sattler - summer 2014I am Canadian, and like all Canadians, I say ‘about’ not ‘a-boot’ and there is no W in North (it’s also a one syllable word). I do catch myself saying ‘eh’, but admittedly, I do it more when I’m in the US. Just because. You know. Eh?

What inspired you to become a novelist, and did you always want to write?

While I did write one book when I was back in high school, I did not think about writing until a few decades later, when I found myself unemployed and allegedly having a lot of time on my hands. But when that started, I couldn’t stop. My first book sold on my 40th birthday, and I haven’t looked back.

What do you think is significant about Christian fiction?

MennoniteSeriesThere is more to Christian fiction than a simple lack of sex between the pages. A good Christian fiction novel need not be preachy, in fact, it shouldn’t be. If a person wants to be preached at, then they can go to church or listen to a recorded sermon from a church with good recording equipment on the web.

The significance of Christian fiction is that the novels will feature a story about a person or people who are Christians, and living their lives as Christians. That doesn’t mean the characters don’t mess up or fail. If they didn’t, that would be too far fetched even for fiction. For me, it’s refreshing to follow the story of characters who live their faith as best they can, and then come out ahead in the end. Of course, writing romance, that’s what I read, and I’m a sucker for that happily-ever-after ending.

How do you hope your readers react to the stories you write?

First, I hope they enjoy the happily-ever-after ending as much as I do. But I also hope they are affirmed that even though bad things happen in the walk of life, Jesus is always there.

What responses to your novels have affected you the most and why?

VancouverSeriesI think the response that affected me the most was when a social worker wrote me to say she was fed up with her career and was about to quit when she read My Name Is Mike, which is the story of an alcoholic who begins by being forced to follow the Alcoholics Anonymous program, then comes to a relationship with God. The story shows some of the struggles and mindsets that happen during a person’s struggle, but has my usual happily-ever-after ending.

My Name Is Mike can be read alone, but it’s the 4th book in a series, where he is the antagonist in the first book. I had a few people tell me they had a hard time starting it, not liking him from the first book, but were really glad they did, and ended up enjoying the book, and the close of the series.

How has being a novelist impacted your relationship with Christ?

It’s shown me trust. God has blessed me with the ability to make an income doing something that I enjoy, and it’s a comfortable way for me to show the world that anyone can have a relationship with Christ in a normal daily life.

Other than being a novelist, what other goals do you have for your life?

I’m also a musician, and it’s one goal of mine to become a better musician, and to learn more instruments, and to be able to play them well. Right now what I play well is piano and electric bass and stand-up acoustic bass. I am attempting to learn viola and violin and the cello.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Spare time? What’s that? Seriously, all my spare time is either reading, or making music. I’m in a community jazz band, and a local string orchestra, and as a new venture, I’ve joined an Elton John themed band.

What can you tell us about your latest novels?

My latest few novels have been short novels. I’m working on another one that’s a different genre for me, I’m co-writing a new story with my husband where one of the major characters is an angel. I’m not sure yet what I’m going to do with it, but I’m probably going to sell it independently on Amazon.

I’ve also recently released a novella in a set with a group of other authors that was a lot of fun, and it’s got a lot of good reviews, which is great. It’s called Love in Mistletoe Springs, and centers around a group of people who have to scramble to put together a fundraiser with a Christmas in July theme to save the local animal shelter. Here’s a link, and it’s on sale right now for 99 cents – Love In Mistletoe Springs

What stories can your fans expect from you in the days ahead?

The Narrow Path - Audiobook

A few weeks ago, one of my older books was re-released as an audio book – The Narrow Path, which is book one in my Mennonite series. Here’s a link – Narrow Path on Audible

I’ve got two books in that series, and I’m working on a third which I’m intending to release independently on amazon.com.

What would you like to say to your fans in New Zealand, and others worldwide?

I think I’d just say ‘hi’. With ebooks and the internet, there really are no restrictions. A few of my books have been re-released in other languages, so that is even no longer a barrier.

Do you have any parting words?

I’d like to thank everyone for being here. I hope everyone likes reading my books as much as I enjoy writing them. Of all the things I do, writing is what I enjoy the most.

I invite anyone to visit my website at www.gailsattler.com where you can learn a little more about me, see my smiling face, meet my pets (dogs, a lizard, and soon I’m going to post a photo of our new guinea pig). Of course my books are on the website, so feel free to check those out, too.

The Mistletoe Springs animal shelter loses their grant, endangering the lives of countless stray dogs, cats, even birds and turtles. The community attempts to save the shelter by running a Christmas in July fundraiser. Groups of volunteers scramble to get all the details together while managing their personal lives. For ten people, love gets in the way.

“A Cockatoo for Two”
Nikki Waldrop is given a cockatoo because her son is allergic to hairy animals. But this biology teacher needs help from the principal, who once lived in Indonesia and knows about caring for a cockatoo. When the sick bird responds with “Gimme a kiss,” hearts begin to soar.

“Brewed with Love”
When Amber Cook meets firefighter Bryan Grant, can she overcome her deep seated fear of fire and discover true love?

“Stray Gifts”
Dani Cooper has vowed to focus on her four kids and stay away from strays, whether animal or human. But will she be able to resist the handsome, mysterious veteran who shows up on her doorstep looking for work…and maybe, for a home and family too?

“Mistletoe Madness”
To say Kayla can’t function in a crowd is an understatement. The only help she can get to do her part to help the shelter is the bane of her existence, her brother’s best friend who has teased and harassed her mercilessly all her life. But Drew’s feelings for Kayla have suddenly changed. Can he both help the shelter, and help Kayla change her mind about him?

“Mr. Christmas and Miss Scrooge”
Mitch Silverton agreed to be in charge of decorating for the fundraiser. And he needs his boss, Margaret Holberg, to donate her family’s vast array of decorations to make the day unforgettable. BUT…
She’s not sharing. Christmas is not a holiday she wants to celebrate in July, and saving the animal shelter is not high on her list of important things to do.
He wants her to share more than the decorations. He wants her heart. Will he succeed in changing Miss Scrooge into Mrs. Christmas?
