15339Tell us a little about yourself.

Aside from the really breathtaking opportunity to write novels, my life is terribly pedestrian. I am a college librarian by day and am married to a great guy who teaches high school physics. I live on the edge of civilization in central Florida, which is a hot and tropical place that is probably quite similar to much of New Zealand.

What inspired you to become a novelist, and did you always want to write?

I think like most writers, I grew up loving to read and was always racing home after school to sink into the pages of a novel. I often toyed with plot ideas in my head, and one day screwed up the courage to try to put it all down in a novel. I had no idea it would take so long to learn the craft! Over the next five years I wrote five manuscripts, none of which attracted the attention of an agent. Those manuscripts were pretty safe, following all the rules and looked a lot like other books on the market.  With my sixth manuscript I decided to try something a little different. I wrote a novel set in late Victorian America that had a somewhat modern vibe in terms of tone and intensity. I tossed in a whole lot of high drama, fantastic villains, and a breathlessly romantic storyline. I broke almost all the rules, and was stunned that this manuscript was quickly snapped up. It became The Lady of Bolton Hill, and is still one of my favorite novels.

camden-1-2What do you think is significant about Christian fiction?

There is tremendous diversity within the genre, so it’s hard to generalize, but at a minimum readers can expect to see issues of faith be treated with respect. They will also avoid graphic language, sex, or violence. I hope that most Christian fiction can inspire people with an optimistic attitude toward life.  The world is not always a place of sunshine and roses, and Christian literature lets us see that as well as an honorable way to respond to life’s challenges. The world is still an amazing place. You don’t always see that sense of optimism in mainstream fiction.

camden-3-4How do you hope your readers react to the stories you write?

At the end of one of my novels, I’d like the reader to feel like they’ve just made friends with a bunch of fantastic people and are sorry to see them go. Those are my favorite kind of novels! I also like to choose a really interesting historical topic to weave in, so readers will get a front row seat to an absorbing event like the building of the Library of Congress or what it was like to survive the Chicago fire.

What responses to your novels have affected you the most and why?

I think it is the diversity of letters I get that is the most moving. I often get letters from very young teenaged girls, but after each novel I also hear from a Vietnam veteran in his eighties who loves my books. I always look forward to his letters, and it means a lot to me that my novels have found a way into his home. When I first started writing I naïvely assumed my novels would appeal to people like me: forty-something year old white women living in America. And yet I’ve gotten letters in broken English from all over the world, from young people, senior citizens and everything in between. I did not expect that, and it has been profoundly moving and humbling.

camden-5-6How has being a novelist impacted your relationship with Christ?

Despite the over-the-top characters I write about, in real life I am a terribly introverted person who has never been comfortable talking about deeply personal topics. I find that writing is a great way for me to share my sense of faith and optimism. My novels usually tackle some pretty difficult issues, and in solving those mysteries I often pray, ponder, and try to reconcile some of the really tough questions with faith. So writing has brought me a sense of peace I never expected to find.

camden-7-8What can you tell us about your latest novels?

My most recent novel was released in January of 2015, called Beyond All Dreams. It is set in the 1890s when the American government was in the final stages of building one of the grandest, most magnificent libraries in the world, (Library of Congress.) It features a librarian who falls in love with a congressman, which was entirely forbidden and could cost Anna her job.

camden-from-this-momentWhat stories can your fans expect from you in the days ahead?

My next novel (coming in December) is called Until the Dawn, and is probably the most spiritually profound book I’ve ever written. It follows one man’s journey from being a committed atheist and into a world of faith. The novel has a beauty and the beast type vibe, as Quentin begins the book as a dark and cynical character, but through his interaction with Sophie he gradually learns to see the world through her eyes.

Although faith plays a huge role in the book, I also wanted to deliver a smashingly good love story. Quentin and Sophie are opposites in all ways. He is dark, she is luminous. He is the heir to one of the wealthiest families in America and she is a household servant.  And yet she holds a radiant optimism he finds himself irresistibly attracted to. It is set in an old gothic mansion that hides centuries of secrets.

Camden-Office-001What would you like to say to your fans in New Zealand, and others worldwide?

I’d like to shout, “Hello!” When I began writing I could never have dreamed that my books would find readership in such faraway places, and I am tickled to death.

Anna O’Brien leads a predictable and quiet life as a map librarian at the illustrious Library of Congress until she stumbles across the baffling mystery of a ship disappeared at sea. Thwarted in her attempts to uncover information, her determination outweighs her shyness and she turns to a dashing congressman for help.

Luke Callahan was one of the nation’s most powerful congressmen before his promising career was shadowed in scandal. Eager to share in a new cause and intrigued by the winsome librarian, he joins forces with Anna to solve the mystery of the lost ship. Opposites in every way, Anna and Luke are unexpectedly drawn to each other despite the strict rules forbidding Anna from any romantic entanglements with members of Congress.

From the gilded halls of the Capitol where powerful men shape the future of the nation, to the scholarly archives of the nation’s finest library, Anna and Luke are soon embroiled in secrets much bigger and more perilous than they ever imagined. Julia Broeder is only six months shy of graduating from the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania when one small decision spirals out of control and results in her expulsion. Hoping to travel the world as a missionary doctor, her only choice is to return back home…or throw herself upon the mercy of Ashton Carlyle.

Formal and straight-laced, Ashton Carlyle is not pleased to see an expelled Julia arrive at his Manhattan office. His position as a junior attorney for the Vandermark family’s world-famous shipping empire entails taking care of the Broeders, longtime employees of the Vandermark family. But Ashton has no intention now of using his employer’s resources in defense of Julia’s impulsive and reckless actions.

What Ashton did not expect was a scathing reprimand from none other than the Vandermark family patriarch or the bewildering resistance from Julia herself when he’s forced to change his tune. At an impasse, Ashton and Julia never anticipated the revelations that arise or the adventure that awaits them.

In this novella, award-winning novelist Elizabeth Camden introduces readers to the world of the grand Hudson River Valley estate Dierenpark and the enigmatic Vandermark family. Includes an extended preview of Until the Dawn, Camden’s full-length Dierenpark novel.
