Dorothy Clark never dreamed she would be an author. One day in church, a visiting pastor said, “God would have you write down all that He gives you.” A short time after, a sentence about a woman holding the side of a wagon came into her head. She obeyed and wrote it down. Floodgates opened and words poured into her head beginning a story. Her first book won the Romantic Times Reviewers Choice Award, and the books that followed have won multiple awards including the Gayle Wilson Award of Excellence, National Reader’s Choice, American Christian Fiction Writers Book of the Year, Yellow Rose and the Carol Award to name a few. She gives God the glory.

When she is not busy writing, Dorothy enjoys visiting with family—who live much too far away—and traveling with her husband throughout the United States doing research for future books. She values her American heritage and believes in God, love, family and happy endings, which explains why she feels so at home writing Christian historical romance.

The following is a September 2015 interview with Dorothy.

Tell us a little about yourself.

DorothyAbout myself…I’m a wife, mother, grandmother, and recently became a great-grandmother. I’ve lived in cities and I enjoy traveling the U.S., but I’m a country woman through and through. I prefer small town living where I have lifelong friends and acquaintances. I’m fascinated by the strength, courage and faith of the people who settled America, and I hope my books reflect the respect and pride I hold for our ancestors.

What inspired you to become a novelist, and did you always want to write?

I’ve always been a voracious reader, but, unlike almost all of the authors I know or have read about, I never considered writing a book. One Sunday in church, a visiting pastor said “The Lord would have you write down all that He gives you.” A couple of weeks later a sentence about a lady holding onto the sideboard of a wagon came into my head and refused to go away. I finally wrote it down and it was as if a floodgate opened. Words poured into my mind and I wrote them down. That was the beginning of my first book, a Christian historical published in April 2004. I’ve been writing ever since.

What do you think is significant about Christian fiction?

Clark-ExchangeThe most significant thing about Christian fiction for me is the opportunity to demonstrate God’s love through the experiences of the characters in a story. People who would not think of reading a Bible will read a Christian romance.

How do you hope your readers react to the stories you write?

Naturally, I hope they love the story! But, above that, I hope my readers are touched by the message of truth contained in the story and take away a sense of peace and well-being—even if they don’t realize why.

What responses to your novels have affected you the most and why?

The hero in my first contemporary romance [Hosea’s Bride] was a pastor and the heroine was an ex-prostitute. I will never forget the heart-rending letters that poured in from woman and girls who had been abused and still suffered self-esteem issues because of it thanking me for writing that story about forgiveness. I still get those letters.

How has being a novelist impacted your relationship with Christ?

Clark-Pinewood-WeddingsThe Lord has used the books to draw me even closer to Him. I pray for every story, for the message of truth He wishes me to share in it, and that it will bear fruit for His glory. I am amazed at how the Lord uses my stories, and, of course, I am so thankful for the privilege of writing books that honor Him.

Other than being a novelist, what other goals do you have for your life?

My other goals are family centered. I recently became a great-grandmother and I want to find the time to travel and see the baby often. I also want to exercise more. And then there are all of those books I’ve bought to read when I have the time…

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Spare time? I’m a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother on top of being a writer–what spare time? Seriously, I like to travel throughout the states with my husband to research locations for books. And I like to explore antique shops in the different areas. At home I like to cook and bake and design furniture and houses. And when I’m thinking through a scene I like to work jigsaw puzzles or dance to the old, romantic ballads.

What can you tell us about your latest novels?

Clark-ChautauquaThis novel and the one that preceded it are set in the beginning years of the world-famous Chautauqua Institute. The heroines of the books are involved in the serious social issues of the day; the Temperance Movement in An Unlikely Love, and Woman’s Rights in His Precious Inheritance. Of course, the heroes have opposing viewpoints. I really enjoyed writing these books.

What stories can your fans expect from you in the days ahead?

I am presently working on a series of books, set in Wyoming territory, that are based on a twist of the mail-order bride practice of the day. The twist makes for very interesting situations. And that’s all I’ll say…

What would you like to say to your fans in New Zealand, and others worldwide?

ClarkDIt’s so lovely visiting with you all today. It’s amazing to me how we can do that, thanks to the internet. Thank you for reading my books and for coming today to visit with me. I appreciate and value each of you.

Do you have any parting words?

Thank you so much for inviting me to be the featured author today. And thank you for all you do to promote Christian fiction worldwide. You’ve made this site a wonderful place where authors and their fans from all over the world can gather to meet and visit with each other.
