Tell us a little about yourself.

SigningI grew up in a family of five kids in a small town outside Boston.  We spent summers in Cape Cod where I learned to love the sea, sand and lobsters.  My mother was a Doctor and my father was a Biologist, so it was a little bit odd to not feel any pull toward science.  Or anything related to math.  I was always an avid reader of romance, even as a tween.  I wrote soap opera scripts as a kid.  I discovered fairly early that writing was something I was good at, which led me to become an English major in college.  I met my husband at Syracuse University where we were both students.  For over ten years I was a federal Investigator in Boston.  After moving to Connecticut after the birth of my youngest daughter I began to focus on the craft of writing and becoming a published author.  I am huge lover of all things French, which makes me a Francophile.  I studied the language for ten years and would love to live there for a year to experience the lifestyle for an extended period of time.  More important to me than my writing career has been the raising of my two daughters, who are twelve and nineteen.  I have been blessed to have a career that allows me to work from home.

What inspired you to become a novelist, and did you always want to write?

Growing up across the street from a public library sealed my fate.  I was a huge fan of Nancy Drew and Phyllis Whitney.  I always knew I wanted to be a writer.  I just didn’t know exactly how to get there.  I was an English major in college so I honed my craft in the classroom and writing in my free time.  Being a huge consumer of books helped me along on my journey.  If you’re not reading it is pretty difficult to become a writer.  My writing journey changed when I went online to the Harlequin forums and stumbled across an opportunity to pitch to an editor from the Love Inspired line.  That editor—Emily Rodmell—is now my editor.  I pitched my book “Reunited with the Sheriff” to her and she bought it.

What do you think is significant about Christian fiction?

calhoune-love-inspiredI think Christian fiction is significant because it impacts the reader in a way that is deeply personal and meaningful.  The themes in Christian fiction resonate with our readers because they tie in with a faith message.  That message is impactful in the everyday lives of readers.  Whether it is a message of forgiveness or hope or redemption, that can directly speak to issues that readers are struggling with in their daily lives.

How do you hope your readers react to the stories you write?

I hope my readers find joy in my books, as well as hope.  I often write about forgiveness and I hope that readers understand that God forgives all our sins and that it’s never too late for redemption.  As human beings we all make mistakes, yet God allows us His grace.  I want readers to escape into my books and fall in love right along with my characters.

What responses to your novels have affected you the most and why?

I wrote a book entitled “Heart of A Soldier” which features a paraplegic heroine.  When I received a letter from a reader who was a paraplegic and a horse lover like my heroine Holly I was stunned.  She loved the book and told me that although she had never been fortunate enough to find love herself, she was rooting for the heroine.  The book resonated with her, so I was incredibly moved by her story and to know that I got it right.  And receiving letters from parents of soldiers is incredibly moving.  And it touches my heart to receive messages from widows who suddenly find themselves alone and read for companionship.  I treasure every single communication I receive.

How has being a novelist impacted your relationship with Christ?

calhoune-seven-brides-seven-brothersI think being a novelist has strengthened my relationship with Christ because I truly believe that He works through me when I’m writing.  I feel very blessed to have been gifted with a God given talent for the written word.  He has allowed me to become a voice in the Christian Fiction romance genre.  I never take that for granted.  God and my readers have truly blessed me.  When I’m having a difficult time with something career related, I know God is there listening.  It’s a great relief to be able to talk to God about my struggles.

Other than being a novelist, what other goals do you have for your life?

I consider being a good mother one of my life’s greatest goals.  I have always sought to be present for my family even though my career is very demanding.  First day of school.  Driving daughter back to college.  I’ve never missed a single precious moment.  For the future I would like to travel more and see some of this beautiful world, mainly places outside of the United States.  I’m a very visual person so I’m always striving to learn new things.  I would like to take up painting & drawing and other creative pursuits.  I would also love to live in France for a year so that I could strengthen my French.  I don’t know how realistic that goal is, but I’m still going for it…one of these days.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

9780373879830I love to read of course, watch movies, spend time with my family and travel.  My family has a summer house in Cape Cod which is near the beach.  I have always been drawn to water, so I find summers in Cape Cod very relaxing.  I love the ocean.  And as a dog owner…a toy poodle and a chocolate lab…I love spending time with the boys.

What can you tell us about your latest novels?

“An Alaskan Wedding” which just released on August 18th in paperback (it’s officially a September release) has been a really fun story to write.  I put a lot of comedy in the book so it is a welcome departure from heavier material.  The book centers around a New York City journalist named Grace Corbett who heads to an Alaskan fishing village called Love in order to get the scoop of a lifetime.  Along the way she falls for a hunky Sheriff named Boone Prescott.  But the secret Grace is keeping about her reasons for being in town just might put a wrench in her relationship with Boone. I also released the last book in my Seven Brides, Seven Brothers series back in June.  This is the final book and it wraps up the series.  Mac Donahue is the last single Donahue brother and his story revolves around finding answers to his birth sister’s mysterious disappearance.  When he teams up with beautiful Delilah Dalton, they both find unexpected love.

What stories can your fans expect from you in the days ahead?

My September Love Inspired book “An Alaskan Wedding” is the start of my Alaskan Groom series.  I have another book in the series, “Alaskan Reunion” coming out in March of 2016.  I am also contracted for two more books in the series, all set in Alaska.

calhoune-sos1On the Indie side I have a series called “Secrets of Savannah” coming out in the Fall.  It centers around six friends who have been estranged in the past and who come together after inheriting a bed and breakfast in Savannah.  I am also planning a spin-off series of my Seven Brides, Seven Brothers series.

What would you like to say to your fans in New Zealand, and others worldwide?

I’d like to say a great big HELLO to everyone in New Zealand and all around the globe.  Thanks for all the support and love.  I love readers from all over this great big world.  One of my big goals is to travel more internationally, so I’m hoping to visit New Zealand one of these days, as well as other countries like Italy, Spain, France, Ireland, Africa, Australia, Canada and many others.

Do you have any parting words?

Thank you for having me on your wonderful site, Ellie.  It’s been a thrill.  You are such a great supporter of Inspirational books.  And to the readers—keep reading!  I would love to hear from any readers out there and I always respond to messages.
