Tell us a little about yourself.

AngelaHuntI’m a youth pastor’s wife, mom to two mastiffs, mother to two young adults, and “Nana” to the cutest grandgirl in the world. Is that little enough?

What inspired you to become a novelist, and did you always want to write?

No, I didn’t want to write at all. I grew up thinking I would be a professional singer, and I did do that for a time. But then I wanted to come off the road and sleep in the same bed most every night, plus I wanted a job I could do while staying home with my little ones. Writing seemed to fill the bill. I wrote for five years, never dreaming of writing book, but then entered a contest for unpublished picture book authors and won. After that, it was a gradual moving through children’s books and nonfiction until one of my editors suggested that I try an adult novel. “Why not?” I asked. I’m a huge believer that a trained writer can write anything, if he studies and uses the right blueprint.

What do you think is significant about Christian fiction?

hunt-booksI’m a literalist when it comes to Christian fiction—just as a banana pie must have bananas in it—even if it’s just banana flavoring—I believe “Christian fiction” should have Christ in it. Lots of perfectly nice novels—and I’ve written many like this—are written by Christian authors, but that doesn’t make them Christian fiction.

How do you hope your readers react to the stories you write?

Many of my stories are parables—and hence not strictly “Christian fiction.” I believe the Spirit reveals the message to those with eyes to see and ears to hear. Everyone else just gets a nice story.

What responses to your novels have affected you the most and why?

KnightsChroniclesBy far the most moving are those who write to say that they’ve grown deeper to Christ through reading one of my stories. But many of my stories are meant to provoke thought, and I cherish those responses, too. I want to write a story that leaves people pondering.

How has being a novelist impacted your relationship with Christ?

Someone once said that the act of writing is the act of discovering what you believe—and that’s true. Writing has forced me to study (literally sending me back to school) so I can be sure to “get it right.” And I’m not talking about the writing craft—I’m talking about the theology.

Other than being a novelist, what other goals do you have for your life?

I want to serve those around me through a heart of love. DangerousBeautyGrieving people, my neighbors, the world OUTSIDE the church. I’ve spent hours filling various quiet roles in my community in order to do that, especially with my camera. Most of the people who see me in those places have no idea that I’m a writer.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

LOL.  I have no spare time.  Every minute is filled with something.

What can you tell us about your latest novels?

I’m currently writing a series called “Dangerous Beauty,” but which I call the “Bible Babes.” Beauty is not always a blessing—it can be a curse. Esther, Bathsheba, Delilah were all beautiful women, and all of them suffered for it to some extent. I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of beauty, and this has allowed me to explore the concept a little better. And delve into research, of course, which I love.

What stories can your fans expect from you in the days ahead?

HarbingersI’m currently partnering with Bill Myers, Frank Peretti, and Alton Gansky in a series of novellas called “Harbingers.” We each write in one particular character’s point of view, and we’re having a ball with these books. I’m always wracking my brain to keep up with the guys—they write fast and furious scenes, and I tend to be a bit slower in my approach. I have to pick up the pace.

What would you like to say to your fans in New Zealand, and others worldwide?

Ah, New Zealand. I’ve been to Australia, but missed New Zealand. I’d love to go there with my camera. I love traveling, so I hope to meet you one day!

Do you have any parting words?

One thing has been whirling around in my mind lately: “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.” We’re not all called to be writers, and not all writers are called to write all the time. Whatever your heart leads you to do, do it well, do it as a sacrifice of excellence to the Lord, but do it! You have been granted a finite measure of minutes in your life, so use all of them well.
