Amy K. Sorrells is an Indianapolis native and graduate of DePauw University, and lives with her husband, three boys and a gaggle of golden retrievers in central Indiana.

After writing and editing for her college newspaper, she combined a nursing degree with journalism and creative writing, which led to publishing and editing a wide array of medical and nursing writing and multimedia projects over the past 21 years, a position as director of communications of her church’s children’s ministry, as well as a weekly column for a local newspaper which ran from 2009-2012. She has been a two-time semi-finalist for the ACFW Genesis awards, and was the winner of the 2011 Women of Faith writing contest.

When she’s not reading or writing, Amy loves spending time with her three sons; spicy lunches and art gallery walks with her husband; digging in her garden sans gloves; walking her dogs; up-cycling old furniture and junk; photography; and friends.

The following is a September 2015 interview with Amy.

Tell us a little about yourself.

amyI’m a midwestern girl who loves nature and raising my family with my husband of nearly 20 years. Also, I’m a registered nurse at a local hospital.

What inspired you to become a novelist, and did you always want to write?

I started jotting things down in journals at the earliest of ages, playing around with poetry, prose and journalism for as long as I can remember. Besides the fact that I work almost full time as a registered nurse, my path to becoming a novelist is quite unusual, in that I got my start in journalism and initially wrote a non-fiction narrative before switching to fiction. Since then, however, I’ve never looked back. Writing fiction is my favorite.

What do you think is significant about Christian fiction?

I think the significance of Christian fiction centers around the hope in the stories…hope that comes in the midst of brokenness and tragedy…hope of the assurance that we have a greater purpose…and hope and a greater beauty awaits us beyond what our eyes can see.

How do you hope your readers react to the stories you write?

mountains_squareI hope my readers take away three main things from my novels: first that they learn something, whether about the setting or history or a new aspect or perspective on God; second that they remember something (or someone), that a character or scene sticks with them long after they read the last page; and third, that their lives are changed, even just a little, by the circumstances that the characters pull through. For example, and regarding this second novel, Then Sings My Soul, I hope readers learn a little more about the pogroms which ravaged Jews across Eastern Europe from the 1880s-1910’s. While much attention in history and literature, in particular, are given to the world wars, the pogroms led to the immigration of millions to America, and in fact more people lost their lives to that era of genocide than in WWII.

What has been the most surprising aspect to becoming a published novelist?

The most surprising aspect of becoming a published novelist is the way characters and stories that have bounced around in my head become almost real to readers—people I’ve never met. I suppose that surprises me, because it helps me feel like I’m not so crazy after all.

How has being a novelist impacted your relationship with Christ?

img_68501Every time I begin to sketch out a novel, I go into it thinking I have a message for others, and in some ways that may be true. But inevitably, I end up on my knees and discover that the greatest work Christ does in the writing of these stories happens within my own heart. If there’s a character I don’t like who needs grace and I don’t feel they deserve it, Christ (and my editors) remind me that no one is outside the reach of His grace. If there’s a brokenness or tragedy I don’t think I am able to write about, God reminds me that there’s no place and no part of us He can’t see and doesn’t want to heal.

Other than being a novelist, what other goals do you have for your life?
I want to be a good wife, a good mama, and to love and follow and serve the Lord well. That’s a general answer, of course, but if everything else I do with the rest of my life centers on these things, though perhaps not grand and lofty goals, I’ll be content.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

img_5473 img_5683My garden is my happy place, and I like to tend to it. And of course I like to read and research new novel ideas. I also like to decorate and putz around my home with my three golden retrievers. And I like to go out to nice, quiet dinners with my husband. I’m not positive, but I might be an introvert. (wink)

What can you tell us about your latest novels?

Then Sings My Soul is a story of my heart. In addition to the horrors of the pogroms, themes of aging and dying and finding hope in the midst of that time in life we all eventually have to face are inspired by my work as a bedside, hospital nurse caring for and listening to the stories of the elderly, as well as my passion and love for the people of Ukraine and Eastern Europe, where my ancestors are from. It’s a sometimes harrowing tale of brokenness and redemption I hope readers will love as much as I do!

After the release of your first two novels, what stories can your fans expect from you in the future?

img_7927I’m so excited about my third novel, Lead Me Home, which will be released by Tyndale House Publishers next summer, 2016. In a way, I’ve “come home” in writing it, since it’s set in my home state of Indiana. As with my previous novels, the stories and characters are quite different, maybe even surprising. But they’re packed full of a lot of hope that I think will resonate with readers. I also have a fourth novel coming the summer of 2017 which I’m in the beginning stages of researching and writing.

What would you like to say to your fans in New Zealand, and others worldwide?

Thank you so much for sparing time out of your busy schedules to give my stories a chance, and in doing so, giving the characters and hope within them a chance as well.

Do you have any parting words?

Always keep an eye out for hope. God’s waiting to surprise you with it!

A Southern Novel of Second Chances
From a distance, the Harlans appear to be the perfect Southern family. Wealth and local fame mask the drama and dysfunction swirling through their family line. But as the summer heats up, a flood tide of long hidden secrets surface.
Devastation from a rape followed by the murder of two family members brings three generations of the Harlans together on their pecan plantation in Bay Spring, Alabama. Chief among them is Anniston, who by the time she turned thirteen thought she’d seen it all. But as her heart awakens to the possibility of love, she begins to deal with her loneliness and grief.
This tender coming-of-age tale, inspired by the story of Tamar in 2 Samuel 13, shows how true healing and hope comes only from God. Though our earthly family can wound and disappoint, our heavenly Father brings freedom to those long held captive through His mercy and grace.

When Nel Stewart returns home due to the sudden death of her mother, she realizes her beloved father, Jakob, is struggling with dementia.
With the reappearance of a high-school sweetheart, deliveries from Ukraine addressed to her, and the discovery of a mysterious, vintage aquamarine gemstone, Nel senses God is pulling her into the past to restore their faith and their futures.

Told partially through Jakob’s flashbacks of fleeing genocide-ridden eastern Europe at the turn of the twentieth century, the novel combines elements of mystery, history, faith and romance to reveal how God redeems the broken years … and our future.
